LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Despite pitching six scoreless innings to end the game, the Boston University softball team came up just short to defending WAC champion New Mexico State, 2-1, on Sunday morning to wrap up the Troy Cox Classic.
With their third one-run loss of the season and second of the tournament, the Terriers fall to 4-4, while the host Aggies move to 3-3. On Saturday, BU rebounded from a 6-5 loss to Ball State with a
stunning 4-3 win over No. 1 Oklahoma.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Already owning two home wins over then-No. 17/13 Kentucky by a combined score of 22-15, the Aggies jumped out ahead with a lead-off homer by reigning WAC Player of the Year Kelsey Horton against freshman Ali Dubois (3-2).
- NMSU added a double and one-out RBI single before freshman Cali Dolfi appeared in relief to prevent further damage.
- The Terriers had two in scoring position with one out following singles by senior Brittany Younan and junior Madi Killebrew in the bottom half but were unable to get on the board due to a failed squeeze bunt attempt.
- Killebrew came back in the fifth to cut the deficit in half by plating freshman pinch runner Jen Horita, who earlier had a stolen base, on a RBI single.
- Killebrew later tried to score from second on junior Emily Morrow's two-out single to left-center but was thrown out at home.
- Freshman Marina Sylvestri drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the seventh and advanced to second on senior Brittany Younan's sacrifice bunt.
- The Aggies' 2017 WAC All-Tournament Team pitcher Samaria Diaz though got a strikeout and ground out to end the threat and pick up the two-inning save.
GAME NOTES
- Freshman Lizzie Annerino pitched the final three innings for the Terriers and joined Dolfi and Dubois in limiting the Aggies to 10 hits.
- The Terriers finished with seven hits and eight left on base, as both Younan and Killebrew collected two hits apiece.
- BU made its first trip to Las Cruces since 2004.
NEXT UP: SAN DIEGO CLASSIC
- BU will remain out west with an extended trip to California, beginning at the San Diego Classic on March 2-4.
- The Terriers will face CSUN, Santa Clara, Colorado State, San Diego State and Oregon State.
