SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After totaling a season-high 13 hits in a 9-2 win over CSUN, the Boston University softball team suffered its first shutout loss to Santa Clara (3-0) for the doubleheader split on Friday afternoon at the San Diego Classic.
Junior
Alex Heinen led the offense with a career-high four hits, including a pair of doubles, against the Mataors, while freshman reliever
Cali Dolfi recorded a combined five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
GAME ONE: BU 9, CSUN 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Brittany Younan led off the game with a single and was followed by RBI extra-base hits from Heinen, senior Jilee Schanda and junior Alexa Ponce for a 3-0 lead.
- In the top of the second, freshman Jen Horita recorded her first-career hit before advancing to second on an error and scoring on Heinen's second RBI double of the game.
- Freshman pitcher Ali Dubois recorded eighth straight outs to start the contest before a two-out infield error set up the Matadors' RBI triple.
- CSUN tried to mount a rally against BU in the bottom of the fourth with a single, sacrifice bunt and RBI double but Dolfi (1-1) relieved Dubois and got two outs to prevent further damage.
- The Terriers added an insurance run on Schanda's RBI single in the fifth and blew the game open in the seventh with four runs off four hits and two errors.
- The Matadors began the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles but Dolfi induced a a ground out, foul out and a swinging strike out to claim her first-career victory.
GAME TWO: SANTA CLARA 3, BU 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Lizzie Annerino (1-2) quickly ran into trouble against the Broncos by allowing two walks, an infield single and RBI hit-by-pitch with one out.
- Dolfi appeared again in relief to get the force out at home and then a pop up to prevent Santa Clara from extending the lead.
- The damage was already done though, as Michaela Vierra (1-5) limited BU to just three hits without a single strikeout.
- Younan had a lead-off single and junior Emily Morrow had a lead-off double in the third before senior Emma Wong earned a two-out single in the seventh.
- The Broncos added two runs in the fourth with a combined four hits and two walks against Dolfi, sophomore Kali Magane and Dubois.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- Heinen is now one of three active Terriers to earn four hits in a single game, joining both Schanda (3x) and Younan ... Shayne Lotito ('09) remains the program record holder with five against Maine in 2006.
- BU improved to 2-0 all-time against CSUN and is now 2-2 against Santa Clara.
- Sitting at 5-5, the Terriers have yet to either sweep a doubleheader or suffer a sweep themselves.

- BU will remain at the University of San Diego on Saturday morning with a matchup against Colorado State at 11:30 a.m. PT and then visit San Diego State at 7 p.m. PT.
