Terriers Drop 48-47 Heartbreaker to Army West Point on Senior Day

BOSTON – Taking the floor at Case Gym for the final time of the regular season, the Boston University women's basketball exploded for a nine-point lead in the third quarter, but fell in the final seconds to Army West Point, 48-47, Saturday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
  • Katie Nelson and Nia Irving pushed BU out to a 4-2 edge two minutes in, though Army  reeled off a 7-2 run to take the lead at the halfway point in the quarter.
  • Corrine Williams and Irving carried the load for the Terriers in the first, combining for nine points, while Williams capped the first quarter with an emphatic block right before the buzzer as the Black Knights clung to a 14-11 advantage.
  • Army pushed its lead to 21-13 with 6:18 left in the frame before BU scored on its next three possessions to put the game within one possession.
  • Irving stayed hot down the stretch, accounting for the final five Terrier points of the half to keep the game within one possession as the scoreboard favored the Black Knights, 25-22, heading into the break.
  • Irving started the second half scoring off before Williams drilled a 3-pointer to give BU the upper hand, 27-25, with 8:43 left in the third.
  • BU's offense continued to erupt as it furthered its run to 11-1 after Payton Hauck converted on an and-1, extending the lead to 33-26 with 6:57 on the clock.
  • Sophie Beaudry kept the momentum on BU's side by converting in the post to give the Terriers a nine-point advantage, 38-29, their largest of the game in the final minutes of the third.
  • The Black Knights closed out the frame with three straight free throws as five of its seven points in the third came from the line.
  • After a slow start to the fourth, Army spurned a 9-2 run to tie the contest up at 41-all with 3:24 left.
  • Williams answered with a drive through the lane before Beaudry hit a pair from the charity stripe to cushion the scoreboard to 45-41.
  • Army responded with a triple before banking in a layup to take the lead, 46-45, with 1:20 remaining.
  • Once again, Beaudry answered in the clutch as she cashed in a layup off a feed from Thompson to tie the game up at 47-47 with 25 seconds to go.
  • The Blacks Knights were fouled on the ensuing possession and made 1-of-2 from the line, giving BU the ball with 6.6 left. 
  • Naiyah Thompson got a jumper from the elbow off right before the buzzer, but it bounced off the rim as Army escaped with the victory.
Game Notes
  • Irving recorded her seventh straight game reaching double-digit scoring figures, finishing with a team-best 13 points.
  • The Terriers defense was stifling in the third, holding Army to shoot just 1-for-10 from the floor.
  • Williams shined on Senior Day, contributing a team-high seven rebounds to go with nine points.
  • Beaudry also posted a standout game with eight points and four rebounds.
  • Army snapped BU's two game-win streak to split the regular season series.
  • The Terriers are 2-6 in the second matchup against Patriot League opponents this season.
