BALTIMORE, Md. – Concluding the regular season Wednesday night at Retiz Arena, the Boston University women's basketball team overcame a 16-point third-quarter deficit, but Loyola Maryland pulled away down the stretch to hand the Terriers a 65-52 defeat.
With the loss, BU will hit the road for the first round of the Patriot League Tournament to take on Lafayette on Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m.
How it Happened
- Corrine Williams and Nia Irving converted on easy layups to put BU ahead 6-2 in the opening minutes.
- The Greyhounds stroked a 6-1 run to briefly take the lead, but Irving worked a spin move on the block to put BU back on top, 9-8, with four minutes left in the first.
- Irving netted the final five points for BU in the first frame of action to hold the scoreboard in favor of the Terriers, 14-12.
- Meghan Doogan knocked down a 3-pointer to further the lead before Loyola reeled off a 16-0 run to close out the second quarter, holding BU scoreless the final 8:26 to take a 30-17 advantage into the break.
- Katie Nelson kicked off the third by connecting from beyond-the-arc before Irving and Pressley reduced the gap to 35-24 at the halfway point in the quarter.
- Payton Hauck netted five straight points before Nelson extended the run to 17-6 with another 3-pointer, putting the score at 36-34.
- Hauck stayed hot as she closed out an explosive third quarter with a floater in the lane at the buzzer, as BU cut a 16-point deficit to 41-38 heading into the final stanza.
- Nelson made it a perfect 3-for-3 from deep to tie the game up at 43-all with 8:30 left in the game.
- However, Loyola used a 7-0 run to reclaim the upper hand at 50-43 with five minutes left in the game and staved off the Terriers to split the season series.
Game Notes
- Irving led the Terriers in scoring and rebounding for the fifth time in the last eight games, finishing with 19 points and seven rebounds.
- All nine of Nelson's point came from 3-point range, while Hauck and Williams follows with eight apiece.
- Turnovers plagued the Terriers in the second quarter, as they turned the ball over eight times, and Loyola capitalized by scoring nine points off miscues.
- Following Doogan's 3-pointer in the second quarter, BU went ice cold as it went 0-for-8 for the rest of the half.
- Loyola snapped a three-game losing streak to the Terriers. The Greyhounds are 2-1 in their last three home contests against BU.
