Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

BU Falls in OT Heartbreaker, 4-3, at Maine

ORONO, Maine -  Seniors Victoria Bach and Rebecca Leslie each tallied a goal and an assist, but Maine scored the final four goals of the game to earn a 4-3 overtime win in a decisive game three of a Hockey East quarterfinal series on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Terriers converted both of their power play chances in the first period, beginning with Leslie's goal at the 10:07 mark. Bach took a feed from sophomore Abby Cook and then quickly fired the puck across the zone to Leslie in the left circle. The captain fired a shot low to the short side for her 24th goal of the season.
  • Bach then made it 2-0 with 3:38 to play in the period. Leslie dished the puck to freshman Jesse Compher in the right circle, where Compher one-timed the puck on goal. Carly Jackson (22 saves) stopped Compher's attempt, but Bach was at the right post and knocked home the rebound for her 39th goal of the campaign.
  • Neither team scored in the second stanza, with BU withstanding some consistent Black Bear pressure, including a surge in the final minute of the frame.
  • Sophomore Natasza Tarnowski made it 3-0 at the 4:07 mark of the third period. A Maine defender passed the puck towards her bench as the Black Bears were completing a line change. Tarnowski took advantage as she collected the puck, skated past a defender and went bar down for her fifth goal of the season.
  • Maine answered with three straight goals, with the third coming at 15:32 of the period, to send the game to overtime.
  • BU earned a power play chance early in the overtime period, but were unable to capitalize.
  • Then, at the 4:39 mark of the extra period, Tereza Vanisova found the back of the net to clinch the victory.

LESLIE LEADS BY EXAMPLE

  • Leslie recorded her second straight multi-point game and 21st multi-point effort of the season on Sunday.
  • The senior captain extended her point streak to seven games (6g, 6a) and finished the weekend with 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points.
  • Leslie will leave BU as the program's all-time assists leader with 102. In 139 career games, Leslie scored 69 goals and finished with 171 career points, good for fourth all-time at BU.

BACH BY THE NUMBERS

  • Bach, a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, remained second in the country in goals with her 39th strike of the season.
  • She extended her point streak to seven games with her two-point day (7g, 6a), and she finished her season fourth in the nation with 67 points (39g, 28a).
  • Bach will graduate as the program leader in goals (104) and points (198), and her 94 career assists ranks third all-time in BU history.

  • This is the first time since the 2007 season that BU will not be playing in the Hockey East semifinals.
