Lehigh Outlasts BU and Scanlon's Career Day, 80-75

BETHLEHEM, PA. – Despite sophomore Tyler Scanlon tallying a career-high 24 points and the defense recording 11 steals, the Boston University men's basketball suffered an 80-75 heartbreaking loss at Lehigh on Saturday afternoon.

With their three-game road win streak snapped in a contest featuring 15 lead changes and a missed game-tying 3-point attempt with five seconds left, the Terriers fall to 12-11 (8-4 PL), while the Mountain Hawks (10-13, 5-7 PL) improve to 6-5 at home.

TURNING POINT
  • After Scanlon hit a tough jumper with one hand for a 75-72 lead at 1:57, the Terriers went scoreless the rest of the way, shooting 0-of-3 from behind the arc and committing two turnovers.
  • Posting a team-high 23 points, Caleb Bennett flushed a jumper at 1:41, and then Kyle Leufroy earned a steal on BU's next possession to set up Kahron Ross' jumper at 53 seconds for the 76-75 lead.
  • The Terriers missed back-to-back open 3-point attempts, leading to Lehigh's two free throws at 28 seconds.
  • BU turned the ball over again with an errant pass with 10 seconds remaining, but senior Will Goff forced a turnover on the inbounds in front of his bench to give the Terriers life.
  • BU found a wide open Scanlon on the other side, but the game-tying 3-point attempt rimmed in and out to Lehigh's hands to seal the Mountain Hawk victory.
THE SETUP
  • The teams traded blows early on with freshman Andrew Petcash hitting a 3-pointer at 10:45 for a 19-14 lead.
  • Lehigh though went on a 21-5 run over the next seven minutes with the help of five treys for a 35-24 lead at 3:18.
  • Shane Acoveno grabbed an offensive rebound and scored before the buzzer to give the Mountain Hawks a 40-31 halftime lead.
  • Scanlon opened the second half on a jumper and followed freshman Walter Whyte's layup with a 3-pointer at 17:50 for a 7-0 spurt.
  • He added another 3-pointer at 14:44 to give BU its first lead of the half, 48-47.
  • With the score tied, 55-55, at 11:03, the Terriers went on an 8-0 run during the next 90 seconds with a 3-point play by senior Nick Havener and 3-pointer by Scanlon.
  • Lehigh called a timeout at 9:44 and eventually tied the game for the eighth and final time at 5:44 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Ross.
  • Havener gave BU its final lead (73-72) at 2:44 on a layup.
GAME NOTES
  • Scanlon finished 9-of-16 from the field and hit a career-high six 3-pointers on 10 attempts to top his previous point total by five ... He is now the fourth different Terrier to reach 20+ points this season.
  • Petcash went 4-of-8 FG (3-of-5 3FG) for 11 points with three steals to reach double figures for the first time against a Division I opponent.
  • Whyte had 13 points and a team-high six rebounds, while senior Eric Johnson posted a season-high seven assists (his most ever in PL action) with four rebounds.
  • Scanlon also had five assists, as BU posted 19 total against just 10 turnovers and outscored Lehigh in points off turnovers, 21-7.
  • Senior and leading scorer Cedric Hankerson (13.7 ppg) missed his fourth straight game due to injury.
  • Shooting over 50 percent from three for most of the season with five treys in the earlier win over Lehigh, Goff (44.7 3FG%) missed all eight attempts today and has shot 2-of-16 (.125) over the last four games in 3-point territory. 
  • Besides Bennett's 23 points, Lehigh had 18 points and six assists from Ross with Jordan Cohen nearly owning a double-double (7 pts., 8 rebs.). 
  • Lehigh started 8-of-11 from three and finished 11-of-19 (.579) for the contest and 29-of-56 (.518) overall, while BU went 11-of-31 3FG (.355) and 29-of-63 FG (.460).
  • The Terriers only attempted three FTs in the second half to finish 6-of-8, while Lehigh went 11-of-12 (.917) ... In the previous meeting, BU went 20-of-28 (.714) against the Mountain Hawks' 5-of-7 (.714) performance.
  • For the fourth time in five years, the two squads claimed a regular season split with BU now leading the all-time series, 7-5.
NEXT UP: COLGATE
  • The Terriers will remain on the road and visit Colgate on Wednesday (Feb. 7) at 7 p.m.
  • BU held the Raiders under 30 percent shooting back on Jan. 11 for a 72-58 win.
  • The Terriers are 2-2 on the road at Colgate since joining the Patriot League, claiming a 69-68 win in their last visit.
