Late Surge Propels Colgate Past Men's Basketball, 74-60

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Down by as many as 11 early in the second half, the Boston University men's basketball rallied to tie the game but ultimately fell short at Colgate, 74-60, on Wednesday night.

Improving to 9-2 at home, the Raiders (14-10, 9-4 PL) avenge an earlier 72-58 loss at BU (12-12, 8-5 PL) and gain sole possession of second place in the Patriot League standings.

THE TURNING POINT
  • After sophomore Max Mahoney tied the game for the sixth and final time at 10:39 (54-54), the Raiders scored 20 of the game's final 26 points.
  • BU managed to pull within five (65-60) at 2:47 and had a defensive stop on the next possession, but the team's 14th turnover led to Colgate's 3-point dagger.
  • The Terriers went 3-of-11 from the field and 0-of-2 at the charity stripe in the final 10 minutes with five turnovers for the loss.
THE SETUP
  • Mahoney opened the game with a layup and scored BU's first seven points, highlighted by a layup and free throw at 15:46 to tie the game, 7-7.
  • Freshman Andrew Petcash and senior Nick Havener hit back-to-back layups to give BU its final lead of the game, 11-9.
  • Leading 14-13 with 12:23 left in the half, Colgate went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes with the help of two 3-pointers.
  • Down 30-21 at 5:35, senior Will Goff and freshman Javante McCoy combined for three 3-pointers to pull within two (32-30) with 3:50 remaining.
  • On the next possession, the Terriers were called with a flagrant foul trying to block a layup attempt, and Colgate took advantage with two free throws and a 3-pointer.
  • Colgate entered the locker room ahead, 40-33, and opened the second half with a 3-pointer to push the lead to double digits again.
  • The Raiders added another trey for their largest lead at 17:54 (48-37), prompting a Terrier rally.
  • McCoy and sophomore Tyler Scanlon combined for BU's next 15 points to help the Terriers pull within two (54-52) at 12:16.
GAME NOTES
  • The sharpshooter Goff (9 pts.) returned to his previous form, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc after going a combined 2-of-16 the past four games, while Scanlon (11 pts.) and freshman McCoy (13 pts.) also had three treys apiece.
  • Scanlon added five assists and tied both sophomore Max Mahoney (15 pts.) and senior Nick Havener (6 pts.) in grabbing a team-high five rebounds apiece.
  • Already without guards Cheddi Mosely and Destin Barnes for the season, the injury-plagued Terriers were without senior and leading scorer Cedric Hankerson (13.7 ppg) for the fifth straight game ... Regular starter and freshman Walter Whyte (8.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg) missed his first game of the season as well due to a leg injury, prompting head coach Joe Jones to use his sixth different lineup of the season.
  • Colgate featured five Raiders in double figures with Jordan Robertson tallying 20 points and five rebounds ... Francisco Amiel tallied six assists, while Sean O'Brien had 11 points, four assists and four rebounds.
  • Averaging 9.6 made 3-pointers per game, Colgate went 12-of-26 (.462) after shooting 6-of-34 (.176) at BU back in January.
  • Colgate finished ahead in rebounds (32-24), made free throws (12-3) and points off turnovers (17-11) to overcome the Terriers finishing with a higher shooting percentage (49.0 to 47.2 FG%).
  • The Terriers lead the all-time series, 27-20, after Colgate snapped a two-game losing streak ... The teams have split the regular season each of the last three years.
NEXT UP: HOLY CROSS
  • BU will return home to host Holy Cross on Saturday (Feb. 10) with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
  • The Terriers won the first matchup at HC back in January, 54-40, with Tyler Scanlon earning Turnpike Trophy MVP honors on eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • BU currently leads this year's Turnpike Trophy all-sports competition against the Crusaders, 6-3.
