BOSTON – Continuing the road trip out west, the Boston University softball team will participate this weekend in the three-day San Diego Classic co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State.
The Terriers are scheduled to open at USD on Friday against CSUN (formerly Cal State Northridge) with a 11:30 a.m. PT start time and then face Santa Clara at 2 p.m. PT. On Saturday, BU will battle Colorado State at 11:30 a.m. PT and then make the short trek to San Diego State for a 7 p.m. PT first pitch. The Classic ends Sunday at 10 a.m. PT against Oregon State.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is playing for the first time in two weeks after posting a 1-2 record at New Mexico State's Troy Cox Classic with a thrilling 4-3 win over then-No. 1 Oklahoma ... Both losses to Ball State and NMSU were by one run apiece.
- The Terriers own wins against the Big 12 (Oklahoma), Big Ten (Michigan State) and ACC (Duke) ... This weekend, they will have two chances to grab a win against the Mountain West and an opportunity to beat the Pac-12.
- BU is hitting .283 as a team and is holding opponents to .258.
- Junior Madi Killebrew was named Patriot League Player of the Week after hitting a team-high .400 with four doubles through the first eight contests.
- Senior Brittany Younan (.367 avg.) and junior Alex Heinen (.321 avg.) are the other two Terriers batting over .300 with a combined six extra-base hits.
- Previously named PL Rookie of the Week, pitcher Ali Dubois (3-2, 3.00 ERA) owns 16 strikeouts in 21.0 innings of work with a shutout performance against Michigan State.
- Both sophomores Lizzie Annerino (1-1, 1.23 ERA) and Kali Magane (0-0, 1.42 ERA) are both holding opponents under .200 but have also combined for 16 walks in 21 innings.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
CSUN (@ USD – Friday, 11:30 a.m. PT)
- The Matadors are a member of the Big West and are currently 6-10 after going 31-22 last season.
- CSUN has claimed impressive wins against Stanford (9-8), Nevada (8-6) and Fresno State (12-2) ... Five of its losses came against teams either ranked or receiving national votes.
- The Matadors are hitting .290 and holding opponents to .319.
- Savannah Horvath leads the way at .409 and a stellar .909 slugging percentage with five homers, seven doubles and 15 runs scored, while Kira Kayley is batting .364 ... Megan Stevens (.283 avg.) owns a team-high 14 RBIs.
- Jillian Jones (3-4, 5.32 ERA) and Taylor Troost (2-4, 5.90 ERA) have totaled a combined 72 strikeouts in 78.1 innings.
- The teams have only met once back in 2008 in Houston with BU claiming a 3-0 victory.
Santa Clara (@ USD – Friday, 2 p.m. PT)
- The Broncos are members of the West Coast Conference and are 0-10 currently after going 12-37 last season ... They have two close defeats to both Stanford (2-1, 5-3) and Santa Barbara (5-4, 4-2).
- Santa Clara is hitting .192 while holding opponents to .342.
- Taylor Burns leads the Broncos at .276 with eight hits, five RBIs and four runs scored, while Morgan Modesto (.250 avg.) owns four doubles.
- Micaela Vierra (0-5, 3.84 ERA) has made seven appearances with two complete-game appearances and owns six strikeouts in 27.1 innings ... Aubree Kim (0-4, 8.80 ERA) has made five starts.
- BU is 2-1 all-time in the series, last claiming an 8-4 win at Santa Clara in 2014.
Colorado State (@ USD – Saturday, 11:30 a.m. PT)
- The Rams are members of the Mountain West Conference and own a record of 8-1 after going 28-22 last season ... They have impressive wins over Texas (6-2), Wisconsin (4-3) and Troy (5-0) with their lone loss coming against then-No. 12 Arizona (3-0).
- CSU is hitting .314 while holding opponents to .230 and owns a 9-2 advantage in homers.
- Sarah Muzik leads CSU at .452 with 14 hits, 11 runs scored and three RBIs, while Corina Gamboa (.393 avg.) has three homers ... Hanna McCorkhill (.217 avg.) leads the Rams with eight RBIs.
- Bridgette Hutton (4-1, 2.21 ERA) has made five starts with three complete-game efforts and has tallied 18 strikeouts against 18 walks in 31.2 innings ... Kaylynn (1-0, 6.79 ERA) owns 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings, while Larisa Petakoff (2-0, 0.00 ERA) has limited opponents to just four hits without a run scored in 10.2 combined innings of relief.

@ San Diego State (Saturday, 7 p.m. PT)
- The Aztecs are members of the Mountain West Conference and own a 6-10 record after going 31-18 last season ... They have a 2-1 win over then-No. 25 Notre Dame and 3-2 (8 inn.) victory over Bethune-Cookman, who previously topped the Terriers in Florida, 6-1.
- SDSU is hitting .218 and holding opponents to .267.
- Katie Byrd leads SDSU hitting .302 with seven runs scored and four doubles, while Molly Sturdivant (.294 avg.) owns a team-high four homers and 14 RBIs.
- Marissa Moreno (2-3, 3.00 ERA) owns 12 starts and has tallied 23 strikeouts in 51.1 innings ... Alex Formby (3-5, 2.26 ERA) has only made start but has pitched the second-most innings (43.1) with 32 strikeouts.
