Weighart: Unlikely Suspects Light the Lamp in Epic OT Win over BC
BOSTON – Sophomore Patrick Curry scored with 4:20 left in overtime to push the No. 18 Boston University men's ice hockey team past archrival and No. 14/15 Boston College, 4-3, on Friday evening at TD Garden in the Hockey East semifinals.
The Terriers will look to secure their ninth Hockey East tournament title on Saturday when they face the winner of Friday's late semifinal between No. 7 Northeastern and No. 9 Providence.
Senior Drew Melanson sent the game to overtime and freshmen Ty Amonte and David Farrance both scored to wipe away a 2-0 deficit. Sophomore Jake Oettinger turned in a 36-save performance in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU erased a 2-0 BC lead before the Eagles went ahead 3-2 with 5:19 left in regulation.
- Melanson quickly responded 45 seconds later for the Terriers to push the game into overtime.
- With a second overtime period looming, freshman Shane Bowers' cross-crease pass found Curry to end the game and secure the Terriers' 12th appearance in the Hockey East title game.
- All seven goals came at even strength, beginning with a tally by BC's Connor Moore just 46 seconds into the contest.
- The Eagles pushed their lead to 2-0 when Julius Mattila scored at the top of the crease just five seconds after matching minors created a 4-on-4.
- Amonte got the Terriers on the board at the 8:57 mark of the second when he took a pass from fellow rookie Hank Crone and skated backwards to better his angle against BC netminder Joseph Woll on the left side.
- Less than two minutes later, a cross-ice pass by sophomore Chad Krys allowed Farrance to one-time the puck to the back of the net in from the right dot and make it a 2-2 affair.
- A go-ahead goal by junior Jordan Greenway later in the middle stanza was overturned after video review due to goaltender interference.
- Christopher Brown gave the Eagles the lead back in the third when he punched in a loose puck in the crease at 15:26.
- Moments later from behind the net, Greenway backhanded a pass to Melanson at the goalmouth to create a 3-3 deadlock.
- The Terriers held a commanding possession advantage in regulation but the overtime period belonged to the Eagles, as Oettinger was forced to make 14 stops in extra time, allowing Curry to provide the heroics.
