FULLERTON, Calif. – Continuing the Louisville Slugger Invitational, the Boston University softball team rolled to a 5-2 victory over San Diego State before falling to host and defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton, 6-0, on Friday evening.
Freshman
Ali Dubois (5-2) went the distance in the first contest for the third time this season, allowing just one earned run and six hits against the Aztecs (8-14). The Terriers (8-11) had seven players record at least one hit for the victory, but the Titans (10-10) limited that number to only four in the night cap to claim the shutout win while posting a 13-5 advantage in hits.
GAME 1: BU 5, SAN DIEGO STATE 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After helping the Terriers turn a 6-4-3 double play, senior shortstop Brittany Younan led off the bottom of the first with a triple.
- Younan eventually scored on a two-out RBI single by senior Jilee Schanda, who swiped second and scored on senior Emma Wong's RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
- BU took advantage of two Aztec errors in the second to add a run and then pushed the advantage to 5-0 in the fifth on junior Alex Heinen's two-out, two-RBI single to right.
- Held to three hits through the first five innings by Dubois, SDSU got on the board with a double and RBI single in the top of the sixth.
- The Aztecs had two on following a BU error with one out, but Dubois induced a fly out to center and a ground out to end the threat.
- Trying to mount a rally, SDSU brought the game-tying run to the plate after a two-out RBI single but popped up to Younan to strand two runners on base.
GAME 2: CAL STATE FULLERTON 6, BU 0
- All-2017 Big West honoree Ariana Williams put the Titans ahead for good in the second by singling through the right side, stealing two bases and scoring on an RBI single against freshman Cali Dolfi (3-5).
- Senior Kaitlin Sahlinger led off the third with a single but was stranded at third following a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch.
- With two outs in the bottom half and bases empty, CSUF hit a double and eventually loaded the bases before prompting a pitching change with an RBI single and bases-loaded walk.
- Dubois got a ground out to prevent further damage, but the Titans came back with a sac fly in the fourth, solo homer in the fifth and RBI double in the sixth to help put the game away.
- Sophie Frost (3-1) held BU to five hits over seven innings with the help of two strikeouts for the shutout win.
