BOSTON –
Christine Laible made 13 saves in net for the fourth time this season to earn Turnpike Trophy MVP honors as the Boston University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 16-7 victory over Holy Cross Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.
Ava Barry powered the attack with five points on four goals and one assist.
Caroline English and
Lexi Lewis posted career-bests as English registered four scores and Lewis put up a hat trick.
Kaitlin Belval posted an outstanding game at the midfield, winning nine decisions to go with four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
How It Happened
- Ryann Gaffney worked solo through the crease three minutes into the game to put BU on the board, and Caroline English followed four minutes later to eke out a two-goal edge.
- Kailey Conry and Barry kept the hot start going, slicing back-to-back scores to push the score to 4-1 with 19:56 left in the half.
- Gaffney went solo again at the 18-minute mark, this time converting on a free position strike, to put the score at 5-2.
- The duo of Conry and Barry stayed hot as they erupted for back-to-back goals again to put the Terriers up, 7-3, with 4:06 to go before the break.
- Barry and English capped a 4-0 run for the Terriers in the closing minutes of the half, putting the scoreboard in favor of BU at the half, 9-3.
- Lewis opened the second half with two straight free position goals before Holy Cross ripped off a 3-0 run to trim the scoreboard to 11-6 with 19:59 left on the clock.
- Lewis and English kept their career nights going, powering in two straight scores to make it a 13-6 game midway through the second.
- The freshmen duo of Gaffney and Barry continued to pour on the pressure, scoring back-to-back goals within a 21-second span to put the Terriers in command, 16-5, with 13:23 remaining
- English put the finishing touches on the night with two minutes left to seal BU's fifth straight win.
Game Notes
- Laible has posted double-digit saves in six of the last eight games and stopped at least 10 shots in nine games this season.
- Gaffney notched her fourth straight multi-goal game and has scored 10 goals over the last four games.
- Tonianne Magnelli also posted a dominant game on the draw, winning six decisions and caused a team-best three turnovers.
- BU improved to 10-1 all-time and earned its largest margin of victory against Holy Cross since joining the Patriot League.
- The Terriers are now 15-4 in this year's Turnpike Trophy series and are 5-0 in spring competition against the Crusaders.
- BU has posted at least a five-game win streak in back-to-back season for the first time since 2008-09.
