WEST POINT, N.Y. – With a postseason berth on the line, the Boston University women's lacrosse team pulled away from Army West Point, 9-8, Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.
With the win, BU will await its opponent in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament, set to begin on Tuesday, May 1.
How It Happened
- Ava Barry deked the Black Knights keeper on a free position shot to put the Terriers on the board 40 seconds in.
- Army delivered back-to-back goals until Sarah Andersen forced a turnover and took it into the attacking end, and Ryann Gaffney delivered the equalizer at the eight-minute mark.
- Barry notched her third straight multi-goal game with a one-timer off a feed by Kailey Conry before Lexi Lewis split a pair of eke out a two-goal edge.
- The Black Knights responded two minutes later by breaking an 18-minute scoring drought, but Caroline English converted on her fifth free position shot of the season to send BU into the break with a 5-3 command.
- Army kicked off the second frame with two straight scores, knotting the scoreboard at 5-all with 22:20 left in regulation.
- Emily Vervlied answered three minutes later as she spun off a defender and pounded in her sixth goal of the season to make it a 6-5 contest.
- However, Army kept the momentum on its side, pushing its run to 4-1 as it took a 7-6 lead with 17:06 remaining.
- BU took the momentum by storm, scoring three times as Engilsh scored in transition before Gaffney and Matthews each found the back of the net within a 28-second span to reclaim the lead, 9-7.
- Army took advantage of a woman-up situation to reduce the deficit to one with 7:39 left.
- Christine Laible iced the game with her 11th save of the game with 50 seconds left.

- The Terriers clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament for the fifth straight year.
