Softball Cruises to DH Sweep over Lafayette

BOSTON – Freshman Ali DuBois recorded a combined 16 strikeouts and two senior outfielders tallied three RBIs apiece to help the Boston University softball team extend the win streak to 11 games with a home doubleheader sweep over Lafayette.

Senior Jilee Schanda went 2-of-2 with two runs and a two-RBI double in the 7-2 game-one win over Lafayette (7-34, 3-11 PL), and classmate Emma Wong went an identical 2-of-2 with two runs and three RBIs for the 9-0 game-two victory.

GAME 1: BU 7, Lafayette 2
  • Senior Brittany Younan singled to left and was followed by Wong's walk to immediately put Lafayette under pressure.
  • With two outs in the first, Schanda doubled to right center and then eventually scored on junior Emily Morrow's double down the left field line for the 3-0 advantage.
  • Pitcher Alex Randall (5-14) tried to help her own cause with a two-run blast to left in the second against DuBois, but the Leopards would never manage to advance a runner past second the rest of the game.
  • In the fourth, the Terriers added three runs off three hits, including senior Kaitlin Sahlinger's double and Younan's single.
  • Schanda added one more insurance run in the fifth by tripling to right center and scoring on junior Alexa Ponce's RBI grounder.
  • Sophomore Lizzie Annerino replaced DuBois in the sixth and held the Leopards to three hits during the final two innings to seal the 7-2 victory.
GAME 2: BU 9, Lafayette 0 (5 inn.)
  • The Terriers again jumped out ahead in the first inning, this time scoring two runs with the help of two walks, a wild pitch, passed ball and throwing error.
  • BU took advantage of another Lafayette miscue in the second with Wong's two-out infield RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Junior Madi Killebrew was hit by a pitch to start the third and was followed by Schanda's RBI triple and Ponce's RBI single.
  • With the bases loaded, Younan hit a sacrifice fly out to left to advance the runners before Wong hit a two-RBI double to left center.
  • Junior Alex Heinen then singled up the middle to put the lead at 9-0.
  • Seven of the Leopards' final nine outs came by way of strikeout against DuBois for the second loss of the day.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
  • The Terriers are now 14-0 all-time in the series and have outscored the Leopards, 85-12, with six shutouts in the last eight contests.
  • All three of Schanda's hits went extra bases with two triples and a double.
