Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Terriers Storm Back to Knock Off No. 10 Bucknell, 12-11

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Boston University men's lacrosse team scored the final six goals of the game to erase an 11-6 deficit and knock off 10th-ranked Bucknell, 12-11, on Tuesday night in a Patriot League quarterfinal contest.

Freshman Chris Gray was sensational, recording nine points on a career-high five goals and four assists. He factored on four of the final five goals of the game, assisting on junior Brendan Homire's game-winning goal with 6:56 remaining in regulation.

The Terrier defense was fantastic down the stretch, holding Bucknell scoreless for the final 21:04 of the contest. BU killed off two penalties in the final five minutes, with sophomore Joe McSorley making three of his 12 saves over the final 15 minutes.

This was the Terriers' first win over a top-10 opponent in program history. BU will now move on to the Patriot League semifinals for the second straight season. The Terriers will face top-seeded Loyola Maryland on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bucknell (11-4, 7-1 PL) struck first but BU (8-7, 3-5 PL) answered when senior Hayden Ruiz found Gray during a man-up opportunity.
  • The Bison scored the next three goals to take a 4-1 lead, but the Terriers responded on the ensuing faceoff. Sophomore Chase Levesque won a battle for a ground ball of the draw and dished it to Gray, who quickly found James Burr. The junior made no mistake for his 36th goal of the year.
  • The Terriers cut the lead to one at 4-3 when Homire fed Gray for the freshman's second strike of the game.
  • After Bucknell pushed its advantage to 6-3, Gray completed his hat trick when he came from behind goal line extended, turned and scored.
  • The Bison added another marker to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
  • BU nearly got the third quarter started with a goal but Gray rang a shot off the pipe and Christian Klipstein made a terrific save in an unsettled situation. The Bison then scored on the other end to take an 8-4 lead.
  • The Terriers answered just four seconds later when freshman Sean Christman won a faceoff and quickly found senior Jack Wilson in front to cut the deficit to 8-5.
  • Burr then ripped home his second goal of the game off an assist from Gray to make it 8-6, but Bucknell responded with three straight goals to make it 11-6.
  • That was the last time the Bison found the back of the net, as BU began its six-goal run.
  • Ruiz sparked it with a pair of assists and a goal. First he fed senior Greg Farris on a man-up chance before setting up Gray's fourth goal of the game. Then, he found the back of the net himself with two seconds left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 11-9.
  • BU continued its scoring in the fourth quarter when Gray assisted Homire to make it 11-10 before scoring his fifth of the game to tie it at 11-11.
  • Gray connected with Homire again to give the Terriers their first lead of the game, 12-11, with 6:56 remaining in regulation.
