Terriers Defeated at No. 6 Loyola, 13-8, in PL Semifinals

BALTIMORE – The Boston University men's lacrosse team's quest for a first-ever trip to the Patriot League title game came to an end on Friday night when the Terriers fell to No. 6 and top-seeded Loyola Maryland, 13-8, at Ridley Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • BU (8-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from freshman Chris Gray and junior James Burr.
  • Loyola (11-3) finally got on the board with 2:58 to play in the opening quarter, but Burr notched his second goal of the game early in the second quarter to regain the Terriers' two-goal edge.
  • Two straight Greyhound goals evened the score, but Burr once again found the back of the net to give BU a 4-3 lead.
  • After two more Loyola strikes, Burr's fourth goal of the opening half knotted things up at 5-5 with 6:14 left.
  • Senior Jack Wilson brought BU back to level terms at 6-6 with 3:40 to go in the second quarter.
  • BU took a 7-6 lead into the break when graduate student Brian Badgett found sophomore Chase Levesque in transition with just 4.3 seconds left in the half.
  • Loyola scored the only four goals of the third quarter to take a 10-7 lead.
  • The Greyhounds added two more goals to open the fourth quarter to make it 12-7.
  • Wilson scored with 7:21 to play to cut the deficit to 12-8, but Loyola responded to regain its five-goal edge and create the 13-8 final.

BURR WITH THE HOT HAND

  • Burr became the first player in program history to score 40 or more goals in a single season, finishing the afternoon with 41.
  • He has tallied at least one goal in every game and at least two goals in 14 of the Terriers' 16 contests.
  • Burr has added 11 assists for 52 points, which is good for second on the squad and is a career high.

GRAY CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE FRESHMAN SEASON

  • Gray became the first Terrier in program history to eclipse both the 70-point mark and 40-assist mark, finishing the evening with 31 goals and 40 assists for 71 points.
  • He has notched a point in all 16 games this season and has recorded at least two points in each of the last 12 contests.

WILSON EXTENDS POINT STREAK

  • Wilson moved his point streak to 59 games with his two goals and one assist.
  • He has only been held without a point once in his entire career. 
  • In those 59 games, Wilson has tallied 99 goals and 60 assists for 159 points.
  • Wilson has tallied 28 goals and 16 assists for 44 points this year.

CHRISTMAN WITH A CAREER DAY

  • Freshman Sean Christman matched his career high with 18 faceoff wins in 25 attempts on Friday.
  • Christman finished the day with eight ground balls and began the afternoon by winning his first five faceoffs.

GAME NOTES

  • Freshman Malcolm Glendinning and senior Isaac Lipton each collected five ground balls, with Glendinning adding a caused turnover.
  • Badgett notched four ground balls in addition to his assist while Levesque added three ground balls along with his goal.
  • Sophomore Joe McSorley made 13 saves, which was his ninth straight game with 10 or more saves.
  • BU finished 2-of-2 on man-down defense and was 19-of-21 in the clearing game.
  • Both teams gathered 36 ground balls.

UP NEXT: DUKE

  • The Terriers will conclude the 2018 season on Sunday, May 6, when they travel to Duke.
