Men's Tennis Opens Patriot League Tournament with 4-1 Win over Lehigh

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After dropping a hard-fought doubles point, the No. 5-seeded Boston University men's tennis team bounced back by capturing four singles points in straight sets to eliminate No. 4 Lehigh, 4-1, on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of Patriot League tournament at the Drumlins Indoor Tennis Center.

By avenging an earlier 4-1 loss to Lehigh (12-9), the Terriers improve to 14-11 and advance to their fourth PL semifinal in five seasons. The teams met in the tournament for the first time since BU edged the Mountain Hawks, 4-3, in the 2015 PL quarterfinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman David Bogatin and sophomore Fabian Soemarno jumped out to a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but Lehigh grabbed the 1-0 lead by winning the tiebreakers at lines 2 and 3.
  • Sophomore Marc Sable started off in singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 6 slot to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Bogatin continued his strong play from doubles to a dominating 6-1, 6-4 win at line 3.
  • Freshman Pedro Gutierrez duplicated Bogatin's efforts by dropping just five games at line 4 (6-3, 6-2) for the 3-1 lead.
  • Freshman Pete Siozios clinched the team victory by holding off George Cooper in a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 slot.
  • Both junior Satyajit Simhadri (#1) and freshman Owen Lu (#2) were ahead in their respective singles match when play was halted due to the Terriers capturing four points.
NEXT UP: NAVY
  • The Terriers will face the top-seed Midshipmen on Saturday at 10 a.m.
  • BU has won the last two regular-season matchups against Navy, including earlier this year, by identical scores of 4-3.
  • The teams will meet in the PL semifinals for the third time with the Midshipmen posting a 4-3 win in 2014 and 4-1 victory in 2015.
  • The Terriers will be seeking their first conference tournament final appearance since 1999.
