Navy Holds Off Late Rally to Edge BU in Patriot League Semifinals, 4-3

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After claiming the doubles point, top-seeded Navy held off a late charge to eliminate the No. 5 Boston University men's tennis team, 4-3, in a Patriot League semifinal thriller on Saturday afternoon at the Drumlins Indoor Tennis Center.

With their 10th straight win, the Midshipmen improve to 27-10, while the Terriers end their season at 14-12. The teams met in the semifinals of the PL tournament for the third time since BU joined the conference in the summer of 2013 with Navy prevailing in both 2014 (4-3) and 2015 (4-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Midshipmen won the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches by a combined score of 12-5 to earn the first point.
  • Navy extended the lead to 3-0 with singles wins over junior Satyajit Simhadri (7-6, 6-3) and freshman Pedro Gutierrez (6-3, 6-4).
  • The final four singles contests went to a third set with BU rallying to tie the score at 3-3.
  • Freshman Owen Lu won just one game in his first set before claiming a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory at line 2.
  • Freshman David Bogatin also mounted a successful rally to win the No. 3 match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
  • Sophomore Marc Sable tied the score by pulling out the third-set tiebreaker at line 6 for the 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) victory.
  • In the No. 5 slot, freshman Pete Siozios and Gabriel Pilones traded identical 6-4 scores in the first two sets and were tied, 5-5, in the clinching set.
  • A sophomore, Pilones broke Siozios in the final game to prevail, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
LOOKING FORWARD
  • Finishing just one point shy of making its first conference title match appearance since 1999, the Terriers will return everyone back for next season.
  • BU has made the PL semifinals in four of the last five tournaments.
  • The 14 victories this season are the program's most in over a decade.
  • Bogatin led the Terriers with 24 singles wins with Lu (21), Sable (20) and Siozios (20) also recording at least 20 victories this year.
  • On the doubles end, Lu and freshman Ethan Kolsky teamed together for a team-high 10 wins, while Bogatin and sophomore Fabian Soemarno posted nine.
