Bucknell Spoils Softball Senior Day, 2-1

BOSTON – Despite loading the bases in three separate innings, the Boston University softball team fell in extra innings to Bucknell, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

With their 15-game win streak snapped, the Terriers move to 33-18 and remain atop the Patriot League standings at 12-3, while Bucknell (26-20-1) ends its regular season at 13-5 in conference play. Owner of a potential tiebreaker against the Bison due to Saturday's DH sweep, BU just needs one more victory at Colgate next weekend to clinch the top seed for the Patriot League tournament and two victories to claim sole possession of the regular season title.

Prior to the first pitch, the Terriers celebrated the careers of seniors Diana Parker, Kaitlin Sahlinger, Jilee Schanda, Emma Wong and Brittany Younan.

EIGHTH INNING
  • Bucknell took its second and final lead of the game in the top of the eighth with Anna Gimmestad hitting a one-out double to left against freshman Ali DuBois (23-7), advancing to third on a grounder and scoring on a passed ball.
  • Junior Emily Morrow led off in the bottom half with a single and eventually moved to third after the Terriers got a hit-by-pitch and walk to load the bases.
  • Laura Lichtenwalner (6-9) clinched the victory by inducing a ground out to short.
THE SETUP
  • Lauren Hadley led off the second with a solo homer to left to grab a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Terriers loaded the bases in the third with one out on a walk, error and single, but Taylor Langtry got out of the jam with a force out at home on a grounder and then a fly out.
  • Both teams had their opportunities in the fourth, as Bucknell led off with a double.
  • The Terriers though turned a double play and then had back-to-back one-out singles by junior Alexa Ponce and Sahlinger.
  • Senior Brittany Younan drew a two-out walk, but again, BU stranded all three runners on base.
  • BU finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth, as junior Madi Killebrew hit a one-out infield single and then scored on Schanda's triple to left center.
  • In the sixth, Younan had a two-out single and tried to stretch a Bucknell throwing error on Wong's infield grounder into a run but was thrown out at home.
  • Bucknell had an opportunity to grab the lead in the seventh after leading off with a double, but DuBois got a pop up, strikeout and ground out to help send the game to extra innings.
GAME NOTES
  • BU left 13 on base, while Bucknell stranded five runners.
  • Younan went 1-of-2 with a single and three walks, and Schanda had a game-high two hits.
  • Schanda's 14 career triples are tied for fifth all-time at BU with Jayme Mask ('14) and Jaime Haas ('05).
  • The Terriers' 15-game win streak tied for the third longest in program history and also tied the 2015 Lehigh squad for longest in Patriot League history ... The win streak was the longest since BU won 18 straight in 2001.
  • BU had a 13-game win streak in 2014 that was snapped by Bucknell in the regular season finale ... As the No. 2 seed, the Terriers went on to defeat the No. 3 Bison twice in the Patriot League tournament.
  • Following today's result, the Terriers are now 3-9 in one-run decisions this year and 5-4 in contests that require extra innings.
NEXT UP: COLGATE
  • The Terriers will end the regular season in Hamilton, New York, on May 5 - May 6.
  • BU swept the Raiders last season at home (9-7, 6-1, 6-0) and won two of three at Colgate in 2016 (0-1, 9-2, 5-0).
