BOSTON – Behind the bat of junior
Madi Killebrew, who launched a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the fifth as part of a five-RBI afternoon, the top-seeded Boston University softball team advanced to the Patriot League Tournament championship round with a 6-4 victory over No. 2 Bucknell Friday afternoon.
The Terriers (38-18) will meet the No. 3 Mountain Hawks for the automatic NCAA berth on Saturday with a 10 a.m. start time.
Killebrew put forth a 3-for-4 day at the plate, lining a pair of RBI doubles to go with her fourth homer of the season. Reigning PL Pitcher of the Year
Ali DuBois (27-6) picked up her 27th win on the mound, tying the program single-season record, with four strikeouts over six innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 2018 PL Player of the Year and junior Alex Heinen dropped in a two-out single to right before Killebrew lined a double to center. Heinen wheeled all the way around from first to plate the first run of the game.
- Bucknell threatened in the bottom of the second by putting a pair aboard with two away. The Bison nearly tied the game with a single to right, but the runner at second got caught in a run down and senior Brittany Younan applied the tag to end the frame.
- Younan converted the energy to the offensive end, finding the gap in right center and motored to second to stand in scoring position.
- Emma Wong capitalized, slapping a single back up the middle to make it a 2-0 game after three complete.
- Bucknell started the bottom of the fourth with an infield single before Lauren Hadley homered to center to tie things up at 2-2.
- The Bison continued to pressure by landing runners at the corners with two outs, but DuBois forced a groundout to end the frame.
- Younan sparked the offense once again to start the fifth by working a one-out walk and Wong followed with a hot shot infield single.
- With two down, Killebrew launched a three-run homer to left to stake a 5-2 command.
- The Bison had a chance to tie the game by putting two runners in scoring position with two down, but DuBois ended the inning with her second strikeout of the game to preserve the three-run advantage.
- Killebrew continued to have All-PL First Team member Raenne Geffert's (18-11) number, driving a double to right to bring in Younan for her fifth RBI of the game to push the score to 6-2.
- Down to its last three outs, Bucknell pushed two across on singles to center and had the potential go-ahead run at the plate with runners on first and third with one out.
- Junior Emily Morrow ended the game in style, making a full-extension diving catch on a blooper and gunned the runner out at first to turn two.
GAME NOTES
- With her 15th double of the season, Killebrew moved into tie for third place on the single-season record list for doubles with BU Hall of Famer April Setterlund ('11).
