Softball Ends Regular Season with 5-1 Win at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Featuring a pair of homers and freshman Ali DuBois' 11 strikeouts, the Boston University softball team concluded the regular season with a 5-1 win at Colgate on Sunday afternoon.

With the weekend sweep over the Raiders (11-32, 6-12 PL), the Terriers (36-18, 15-3 PL) will enter next week's Patriot League tournament as the top seed at home having won 28 of their last 32 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers were held scoreless through the first four innings by reigning PL Rookie of the Week Bella Crow, as they started 0-of-10 with a runner on base.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Colgate hit back-to-back singles and took advantage of an error in the outfield to score from first on the second hit to grab a 1-0 lead.
  • Freshman Marina Sylvestri provided the needed offensive spark by earning her first-career homer with a towering shot toward left field to tie the game.
  • Seniors Brittany Younan and Emma Wong then followed up with back-to-back singles before scoring on junior Alex Heinen's two-RBI single.
  • Colgate only managed one more hit the rest of the game against DuBois (25-7) in the fifth.
  • The Terriers loaded the bases in the sixth on two walks and junior Alexa Ponce's single with Younan plating a run on a sacrifice fly to center.
  • Senior Kaitlin Sahlinger added the fifth and final run in the top of the seventh with a two-out blast to right center.
GAME NOTES
  • Sylvestri became the eighth Terrier to hit a homer this season in the fifth inning.
  • With two RBIs, Heinen now owns 49 this season, tied-for-second most all-time in the Patriot League, and third most in the BU record book.
  • DuBois' 25 wins are the fifth most in a PL season and tied-for-fifth in the BU record book.
  • After reaching double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time in a game this season, DuBois now owns 175 strikeouts, 10th most ever in a season at BU.
  • The Terriers improved to 14-1 all-time against Colgate with an 8-1 road record.
NEXT UP: PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT

  • BU went 2-1 during the regular season against No. 2 Bucknell, No. 3 Lehigh and No. 4 Army.
  • BU will open against Army on Thursday (May 12) at 12 p.m., and Bucknell will face Lehigh at 2:30 p.m.
  • The Terriers are 8-2 all-time in the PL tournament, claiming the automatic NCAA berth at Lehigh in 2014 and 2016 ... Last season, they were eliminated by the Mountain Hawks in the championship round by a pair of one-run decisions.
