July 31, 2018 | Field Hockey, General
Coming in at No. 2 is the field hockey team claiming its third Patriot League title in four years with junior Ally Hammel earning NFHCA Regional Player of the Year honors.
Sally Starr's team returned to the NCAA Tournament after claiming the 2017 Patriot League title in thrilling fashion at New Balance Field.
The Terriers posted a perfect 6-0 record in Patriot League play to earn the right to host the conference tournament for the third straight year. After blanking Holy Cross, 4-0, in the semifinals, the Terriers found themselves down a goal to Bucknell in the championship game. Sophomore Kiley Gallagher scored the game-tying goal and then set up senior Allie Renzi's game-winner with 2:25 left in regulation to claim the team's third Patriot League title in four seasons.
BU hosted Fairfield in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and posted a convincing 5-0 victory. Up next was eventual national champion UConn and the Terriers put forth a strong effort against the Huskies before falling, 3-1.
Starr and her assistants were honored as the NFHCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year and Starr received conference coach of the year honors for the third straight season and the ninth time in her storied career at BU.
Hammel was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and went on to become the first back in program history to be named a First Team All-American. She was joined by senior Kali Shumock and junior Allie Doggett as unanimous selections to the All-Patriot League First Team and all three received All-Region accolades as well. Gallagher and freshman Ailsa Connolly were All-Patriot League Second Team honorees.
The Terriers benefited from a balanced scoring attack all season with 10 players recording 11 points or more. Connolly made an immediate impact, posting team highs in both points (22) and goals (11) while senior Grace Boston saved her best season for last with 20 points on the strength of nine goals. Gallagher (6g, 6a) and junior Kara Enoch (4g, 9a) contributed 18 and 17 points, respectively, while Shumock added 14 points, including a team-best 10 assists.
Junior Kathleen Keegan and freshman Millie Baker split time in goal, combining for a .650 save percentage and a 1.59 goals-against average. Baker led all Patriot League netminders in save percentage during conference play at .833 while Keegan joined co-captains Shumock and Boston on the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
