PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Nara Elia broke a 3-3 tie with 6:54 remaining in regulation to lift the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 5-3 victory at No. 8 Providence on Friday night at Schneider Arena.
Junior Deziray De Sousa added an empty-netter in the final minute to complete a career-best three-point night. Redshirt junior Sammy Davis tallied two goals and freshman Emma Wuthrich added her second goal of the season to help BU move to 10-6-5 and 7-5-4 in Hockey East.
Sophomore Jesse Compher provided the primary helper on both of Davis' goals and classmate Kristina Schuler had the primary assist on the final two markers of the evening. Freshman Kaleigh Donnelly, junior Breanna Scarpaci and redshirt junior Abbey Stanley each added one assist apiece.
BU has earned three victories over ranked opponents this season, including two on the road. Providence fell to 16-5-0 and 10-4-0 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Davis scored twice in a span of 1:00 to give BU a 2-0 lead.
- Her first goal came at 6:58 of the first period. She intercepted a Providence pass in the neutral zone, spun past a Friar defender at the red line and then dangled past another player before dishing the puck to Compher. The sophomore forward skated into the left circle before finding Davis with a return pass at the front of the net. Davis caught the pass on her backhand and quickly switched to her forehand to fake out Madison Myers and calmly deposit the puck into the back of the net.
- Compher also provided the primary helper on Davis' second strike. Junior Breanna Scarpaci left the puck behind her own net for Compher, who raced to center ice before getting the puck to Davis. The tri-captain did the rest, cutting across the offensive zone before getting to the bottom of the left circle and uncorking a wrister over Myers' glove.
- Maureen Murphy got a goal back at 18:56 of the opening frame to cut the BU lead to 2-1, and the Friars equalized just 1:14 into the second stanza.
- Wuthrich regained the lead for BU at the 10:37 mark of the frame. Stanley dropped the puck back for Wuthrich at the top of the right circle, and the rookie's shot whistled past a sea of bodies and inside the right post.
- Providence tied it at 3-3 at 9:54 of the third period.
- Elia's sixth goal of the season proved to be the difference. After winning an offensive-zone faceoff, De Sousa cycled the puck to Schuler, who won a battle against a defender behind the net before finding Elia at the top of the crease for the finish.
- De Sousa's empty-netter came with 13.7 seconds to play thanks to assists by Schuler and Donnelly, with the freshman beginning the sequence by chipping the puck out of her own zone.
