Men's Basketball Overcomes Double-Digit Deficit for 75-69 Victory at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Boosted by an impressive second-half shooting performance from the field and at the charity stripe, the Boston University men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to claim a 75-69 win at Navy on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Max Mahoney provided 19 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to help the Terriers (9-8, 2-2 PL) remain undefeated at Alumni Hall with a 6-0 record. Freshman Jonas Harper went a perfect 4-of-4 from the field in the second as well, as BU shot 60.0 percent during the final 20 minutes of action. The Midshipmen (5-10, 2-2 PL) suffered their first loss to a 2018 Patriot League semifinalist following earlier home wins against Holy Cross and Colgate.

THE TURNING POINT
  • Facing a 61-56 deficit with 5:07 remaining, Navy used a jumper by Evan Wieck on the next possession and then shortly thereafter George Kiernan's 3-pointer for the third and final tie of the game at 3:31.
  • Mahoney responded by hitting a short jumper to grab the lead for good, as the Midshipmen missed their next three field goal attempts (all from behind the arc).
  • Mahoney followed free throws by sophomore Javante McCoy with back-to-back buckets to give the Terriers a commanding 69-61 lead with 1:21 remaining.
  • BU went 6-of-8 at the line in the final 60 seconds to seal the victory.
THE SETUP
  • Both teams were very sloppy during the first nine minutes of the game with a combined 15 points against 14 turnovers.
  • Trailing, 9-8, with 10:19 remaining, sophomore Andrew Petcash hit a jumper to spark an 8-0 spurt capped by his and Harper's 3-pointers.
  • Freshman Jack Hemphill hit a layup at 7:07 for the 18-11 advantage, but the Midshipmen finished the half scoring 17 of the final 26 points to enter the half ahead, 28-26.
  • Both teams shot under 40 percent in the first half but heated up in the second, especially the Mids at the start.
  • John Carter J. and Hasan Abdullah flushed 3-pointers on Navy's first two possessions, as the Mids opened with a 14-2 run capped by Kiernan's layup at 15:53.
  • Davis drained his first trey at 12:48 for Navy's final double-digit lead of the game (47-36), which quickly went back to single digits on Harper's bomb.
  • Davis add another at 11:07 to push the Mids lead to 52-43, but again, Harper stepped up with a 3-pointer to spark a 18-4 run capped by two free throws by redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino at 5:07.
  • Hemphill gave BU its first lead of the half with 7:23 remaining on BU's sixth and final 3-pointer.

  • Making a strong case for PL Rookie of the Week with his first two double-figure performances of the season, Harper went a combined 10-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-6 3FG, for a 14.5 ppg average.
  • Mahoney has now reached 20+ points five times in the last eight games after hitting the mark seven times in his first 60 appearances as a Terrier.

  • BU went 15-of-25 FG in the second half after being held to 11-of-28 in the first.
