Loyola Maryland Spoils Mahoney's Career Night in Overtime, 81-73

BALTIMORE, Md. – Despite junior Max Mahoney tallying a career-high 31 points, the Boston University men's basketball team fell in overtime at Loyola Maryland, 81-73, on Wednesday night.

The Terriers (9-9, 2-3 PL) led for over 40 minutes in the contest and finished with a higher field goal shooting percentage (45.6–41.9) but were undone by 23 turnovers. Highlighted by Andrew Kostecka's 28 points, the Greyhounds (6-12, 2-3 PL) outscored BU off turnovers (27-16), on second-chance points (18-6) and at the charity stripe (23-12) to claim their third straight win at Reitz Arena in the series.

Mahoney went 11-of-19 from the field and 9-of-10 at the line to become the first Terrier since Cedric Hankerson ('18) last season to eclipse 30 points while adding seven rebounds and a career-high four blocks. Sophomore Javante McCoy and freshman Jonas Harper combined for 25 points, but Loyola had five total Greyhounds finish in double figures to offset the BU trio's offensive production.

  • Mahoney gave the Terriers their final lead of the game at 3:26 (73-72) on another layup with the assist from junior Tyler Scanlon.
  • After recording his third steal and drawing a foul on a layup attempt, Isaiah Hart missed both free throw attempts at 1:38, but James Fives hauled in the rebound and hit both free throws to give the Greyhounds the lead (74-73) for good.
  • The Terriers committed a turnover on the next possession, and Hart made them pay with Loyola's sixth trey at 49 seconds for the 77-73 advantage.
  • BU missed its final five shot attempts and committed three turnovers during the final 3:25 of the contest.
FINAL STRETCH OF REGULATION
  • After grabbing a 55-43 lead with 12:02 remaining, BU missed its next six field goal attempts until McCoy hit a jumper at 6:50 to pull ahead, 59-55.
  • Jaylin Andrews hit a 3-pointer on the next possession and Kostecka followed with two free throws to grab Loyola's first lead of the game, 60-59, at 6:09.
  • Freshman Jordan Guest and redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino followed with back-to-back layups to retake a 64-60 lead, and Harper flushed a 3-pointer at 2:49 to break a 64-64 deadlock.
  • Loyola then scored four straight points on back-to-back steals but found itself trailing, 69-68, at 1:28 when Mahoney drained both free throw attempts.
  • BU got a defensive stop but came up empty on its next possession before fouling KaVaughn Schott, who went 1-of-2 at the line with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game.
  • The Terriers turned the ball over again with 22 seconds remaining, but Loyola was unable to take advantage to send the game to OT.

  • Loyola came out of a called timeout with three straight buckets of its own to cut the deficit to 13-8.
  • The Terriers regained momentum and grabbed their largest lead at 7:24 (28-15) on Guest's layup.
