Terriers Stave Off Loyola, 64-62, in Overtime Thriller

BALTIMORE, Md.. – Holding a 22-point lead early in the third quarter, Loyola Maryland stormed back into the game with a furious second-half comeback, outscoring the Boston University women's basketball team 40-23 to force overtime. From there, Payton Hauck took over, scoring five of BU's six points in the extra frame, including delivering the game-winning basket with 51 seconds left, and iced the game from the free throw line as the Terriers escaped with a 64-62 decision Wednesday afternoon at Reitz Arena.

With the win, BU it off to its first 3-0 start in the Patriot League since joining the conference in 2013.

How It Happened
  • Neither team could set the tone to start the game as the score held at 5-2 in favor of the Terriers after the opening five minutes.
  • Hauck proved why she was selected as the Patriot League Player of the Week, pouring in six points to give BU an 11-10 edge.
  • The Terriers started the second quarter with a 7-0 run before Katie Nelson and Spearman combined for the next seven points.
  • For the second straight game, BU hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to close out the half as Lauren Spearman connected from deep.
  • Spearman's triple capped a 10-0 run to close the frame to send the Terriers into the break with a 35-18 grip on the scoreboard.
  • BU carried its momentum into the third as a Nelson make from beyond-the-arc sparked a 6-2 run, guiding the Terriers to a 22-point lead.
  • Nia Irving went to work in the post midway through the frame, putting in three straight baskets, including converting an and-1.
  • Despite shooting over 50 percent from both the floor and 3-point range in the third, Loyola outscored the Terriers 23-17, but BU held firm with an 11-point advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • Loyola held the Terriers scoreless for nearly nine minutes in the fourth, allowing it to tie the game 55-all with 1:20 left before switching the lead on the ensuing possession.
  • Naiyah Thompson and the Greyhounds exchanged free throws, giving BU the ball with 23.9 ticks remaining.
  • Nelson was fouled driving through the lane and converted on two clutch free throws with 7.6 ticks left to push the game into overtime.
  • Hauck kicked off the extra frame by driving to the basket, though Loyola put in two straight drives of its own to go back up by two points.
  • Following a free throw by Nelson, Hauck continued to slash through the Greyhound defense, banking in a jumper from the block to give BU a 63-62 lead with 51 seconds left.
  • The basket would hold as the Greyhounds missed a wide open layup with six seconds left and Hauck took the rebound and drove across the court before being fouled.
