No. 20 Terriers to Face Northern Michigan in Home Opener
October 17, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The 20th-ranked Boston University men's ice hockey team will open its home schedule with a weekend series against Northern Michigan beginning on Friday (Oct. 18) to kick off Family & Friends Weekend.
A new season of hockey at Agganis Arena kicks off on Friday at 7:30 p.m. while the series finale on Saturday will start at 7 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on CBS All Access.
This marks Northern Michigan's first visit to BU since 1988 and the teams haven't faced off since the 2002 Ice Breaker Tournament. The Terriers are 3-6-1 all-time against NMU and 2-2-0 at home.
BU (1-0-0) opened its season with a 7-3 road victory over Union back on Oct. 5 while the Wildcats (1-1-0) kicked their schedule off last weekend at home, earning a split with in-state rival Michigan Tech. BU and NMU are coming off similar seasons, having finished adjacent in last year's final PairWise rankings while both having their seasons come to an end in their respective conference semifinals.
NMU's top returner is senior defenseman Philip Beaulieu, who earned All-America honors as sophomore and last year finished with 35 points on six goals and 29 assists. Up front, classmate Darien Craighead has 78 career points, including 34 goals. Three other forwards - junior Joseph Nardi (9g, 11a) and sophomores Griffin Loughran (7g, 11a) and Ty Readman (4g, 9a) - are back after each putting up at least 13 points a season ago. Sophomore Vincent de Mey tallied two goals and an assist versus Michigan State last weekend.
The biggest void for the Wildcats to fill is in goal, as Atte Tolvanen graduated after manning the net for 137 games and nearly 8,000 minutes during his 62-win career. Freshman John Hawthorne and sophomore Nolan Kent each got a start in the series against the Spartans with Hawthorne picking up the win via a 15-save shutout.
Eleven Terriers got at least one point in the triumph over Union with senior captain Patrick Curry (2g, 1a) and junior David Farrance (1g, 2a) each recording a three-point performance. Four others had two points apeiece, including sophomore Matthew Quercia, who scored twice after finding the back of the net just once as a rookie.
Graduate student Sam Tucker got the start in goal for BU and made 10 saves on 13 shots as the Terrier defense kept the Dutchmen's scoring chances to a minimum throughout the contest.
