Holy Cross Hands Women's Soccer 2-1 Defeat

BOSTON – Hosting Holy Cross in a Turnpike Trophy matchup, the Boston University women's soccer team scored five minutes into play, but the Crusaders scored twice in the second half to escape with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.

How It Happened
  • The reigning Turnpike Trophy MVP, Anna Heilferty, wasted no time in making her case for defending the honor, sending in a one-timer on a beautiful cross from Jenna Oldham in the fifth minute.
  • Oldham drove down the right side of the field while fending off a defender, creating enough space to line a cross right in front of the net for Heilferty to finish off.
  • Heilferty nearly tabbed her second career brace against the Crusaders, maneuvering past a trio of defenders before just missing bending a ball under the crossbar.
  • The Terriers continued their assault on the Holy Cross backline to open up the second half, as Chloee Sagmoe and Shannon Keefe roped back-to-back shots inside the box in the 48th minute.
  • However, Holy Cross made quick work on a counter in the 51st minute when Carly Flahive sent a cross towards the middle of the field. With no one in sight, Paige Epp charged towards the loose ball and slotted it into the back-left corner to knot the score.
  • Amanda Fay answered, making a spectacular stop on a strike headed towards the upper 90 in the 68th minute.
  • The Crusaders took advantage of another defensive lapse, as Kelly Crowley fired off a shot from 22 yards out that was deflected, but she stuck with the play and buried the follow-up from 10 yards away just inside the right post for the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute.
Game Notes
  • Heilferty has produced at least one point and owns seven points total over three career games against Holy Cross.
  • Fay matched her career high with eight saves.
