Cortet Header Propels Men's Soccer Past Colgate in OT, 2-1

BOSTON – Sneaking through the Colgate backline, senior Satchel Cortet headed in a long free kick from freshman Jorge Lopez Lacu to give the Boston University men's soccer team a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against the three-time defending Patriot League champions on Saturday evening at Nickerson Field.

Helped by an earlier goal from senior Matt McDonnell and six saves by junior Michael Stone, the Terriers (1-9-1, 1-3-0 PL) snapped a three-game losing streak to the Raiders (2-5-4, 1-2-1 PL) for a critical three points in the conference standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers earned back-to-back corners, and McDonnell converted on the second from sophomore Kari Petursson by using his chest to place the ball past the keeper Jacob Harris at 7:13.
  • Petursson nearly doubled the lead in the 21st minute by ripping a shot at the top of the box, but Harris was in position for the save.
  • Stone made his first save at 28:06 to help the Terriers enter the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
  • The teams went back and forth in a physical second half that saw Colgate draw four cards against BU's two with the teams combining for 20 fouls.
  • BU earned a penalty kick at 68:42, but Harris was able to dive to his left and stop a hard grounder from McDonnell to keep the deficit at one goal.
  • Just 22 seconds after being handed a yellow card, Edward Bass tied the game at 73:52 by collecting a pass from Kentaro Morrisson with his chest and firing past Stone.
  • Bass earned a second yellow card at 76:07 with a dangerous tackle and was sent off to put the Raiders at a disadvantage.
  • Two minutes later, Stone swatted away a header shot, and the backline helped clear a Colgate corner to help send the game to overtime.
  • The Raiders had two more corners and multiple dangerous throw-ins at the box, but the Terriers were able to limit Colgate to just one shot attempt.
  • BU put the game away at 98:16 after earning a free kick from 40 yards out.
GAME NOTES
  • Cortet earned his fifth career goal and first-ever game winner while becoming the third Terrier to find the back of the net this season.
  • McDonnell earned his fifth goal of the season, while Petursson moved into a tie with freshman Marc Roura for team-high two assists.
  • Lopez Lacu became the sixth Terrier to earn a point this season.
  • After scoring their first golden goal since a 2-1 home win over Bucknell in 2018, the Terriers moved to 1-2-1 in overtime games this season with both losses occurring in the 110th minute.
  • Colgate edged the Terriers in both shots (12-11) and corner kicks (7-6) but still suffered its first overtime loss of the season following draws against No. 20 Portland, No. 22 New Hampshire, Yale and Bucknell.
  • BU improved to 7-3-2 all-time against Colgate with the series dating back to 1979 and avenged back-to-back shutout losses.
NEXT UP: AMERICAN
  • The Terriers will visit the Eagles on Friday (Oct. 11) for a 2 p.m. start.
  • BU has won the last two meetings, including last year's 2-1 home decision, and the last two trips to D.C. (2-0 in 2017 and 1-0 in 2015).
