BURLINGTON, Vt. – Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Boston University men's basketball team fell at defending America East champion Vermont, 62-47, on Wednesday night.
The unbeaten Catamounts (3-0) entered the game limiting opponents to 36.5 percent shooting and continued their strong defensive play, as the Terriers (1-2) were held below 30 percent (29.8 FG%) for the first time in seven years.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week
Walter Whyte tallied nine points and eight rebounds, while senior
Max Mahoney recorded seven points and 12 rebounds. A career 50 percent shooter, 2019 AE Player of the Year Anthony Lamb was held to 6-of-14 shooting but still finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead Vermont.
THE SETUP
- With the score tied early, 5-5, Aaron Deloney hit a layup to spark a 13-2 run capped by three consecutive Lamb layups.
- Ryan Davis gave the Catamounts their largest lead of the half, 20-8, at 10:15 on a jumper.
- The Terriers mounted a comeback with three treys, including two from junior Andrew Petcash, to put the game at 20-20 with 5:38 remaining.
- BU was unable to take the lead due to shooting 4-of-9 from the line and faced a 30-27 halftime deficit after Deloney drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the corner.
- In the second half, after Whyte hit a layup on a beautiful behind-the-back pass from junior Javante McCoy to open the scoring, the Terriers got a defensive stop but missed a go-ahead contested short jumper.
- Lamb converted on the next possession with a layup and watched the Catamounts extend the lead to 45-31 at 10:04 on Deloney's layup.
- Whyte's layup at 3:39 cut the deficit to 54-44, but the Terriers would never get any closer.
GAME NOTES
- With two 3-pointers, Petcash is now 7-of-8 from behind the arc to start the season.
- Both Whyte and Mahoney recorded three steals apiece, while sophomore Alex Vilarino earned two.
- BU finished without a scorer in double figures for the first time since a 45-44 overtime loss at St. John's on Dec. 28, 2006.
- UVM went 23-of-53 (.434) and posted a 39-37 advantage in rebounds while outscoring the Terriers in the paint, 32-24.
- Following last year's 78-72 win at Case Gym, Vermont cut BU's all-time lead in the series to 55-46.
- The Terriers made their first regular season visit to Patrick Gym since claiming a 64-59 win as a member of the America East in 2013.
NEXT UP: NEW HAMPSHIRE
- BU will return home and host the Wildcats on Saturday (Nov. 16) with a 4 p.m. start time on NESN.
- The Terriers are riding a four-game win streak in the series following last year's 82-53 road victory in which they drained 12 3-pointers.
- In the last meeting at Case Gym in 2016, the Terriers prevailed, 73-69, despite UNH having three players earn a double-double.
