Terriers Edged in Overtime at Lehigh, 2-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Boston University field hockey team had its season come to an on Saturday in heartbreaking fashion, losing a 2-1 overtime contest at Lehigh on Ulrich Field.

The Terriers finish the season with an overall record of 6-12 including a 2-4 Patriot League mark. 

BU, Lehigh and Holy Cross finished in a three-way tie for the fourth and final spot in the Patriot League tournament. Holy Cross won the tiebreaker, which went to goal differential in games between the other teams in the tie. Holy Cross advanced due its two-goal win over Lehigh.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A penalty-stroke goal by freshman Jodie Conolly tied the game in the final minute of the third quarter.
  • The Terriers put six shots on goal in the final quarter while looking for a go-ahead tally but the game headed to overtime, where Lehigh scored 1:56 in to claim the win.
  • Drew Pecora scored the overtime winner for the Mountain Hawks, following up her own rebound against BU netminder Livy Golini on the right side. 
  • The Mountain Hawks had a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a corner goal by Maddie Monahan in the last minute of the opening quarter.
  • BU regrouped at the half and got an equalizer when a shot by junior Ailsa Connolly was ruled to have been stopped by the body of a Lehigh defender, resulting in a penalty stroke.
  • Conolly stepped up and converted a low attempt to the right boards to make it a 1-1 game with just five seconds remaining in the third.
GAME NOTES
  • Lehigh earned 12 corners, the most given up by the Terriers all season.
  • BU held an 11-10 edge in shots on goal while the Mountain Hawks had a 19-16 advantage in shots.
  • Golini recorded eight saves for the Terriers.
  • Lehigh got a 10-save performance from freshman Maddie Kahn.
  • Connolly finished the season as the team's leader in both goals (9) and assists (5) for 23 points while Conolly was close behind with 19 points on eight goals and three assists.
CLASS OF 2020
  • Saturday's result marked the final contest for Golini and fellow senior Kiley Gallagher.
  • Gallagher was a four-year starter and played in 79 contests while Golini joined the Terriers as a transfer two years ago.
  • Over the past four years, the Terriers claimed two Patriot League titles, made two NCAA tournament appearances and won three PL regular-season titles.
  • Gallagher was selected to play in this year's NFHCA Senior Game later this month at NCAA Championship weekend.
