Terriers Host Vermont for Weekend Series
November 21, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The Boston University men's ice hockey team (3-4-4, 2-3-4 Hockey East) closes out a stretch of 10 straight Hockey East contests with a home weekend against Vermont starting Friday (Nov. 22). The opener starts at 7:30 p.m. while Saturday's contest will begin at 4 p.m. and will be televised on NESN.
Five of BU's final six games of the fall semester are in the friendly confines of Agganis Arena, where the Terriers are 2-1-2 this season.
The Terriers and Catamounts have played 82 times since the 1971-72 season, with BU holding a 49-24-9 (.652) advantage. BU is 15-4-2 in the past 21 meetings and is 9-8-4 in the 21 matchups that have taken place at Agganis Arena.
Vermont (1-7-0, 0-5-0 Hockey East) carries a six-game losing streak into the weekend and is looking for its first Hockey East win of the season. The Catamounts' lone win came via a 2-0 shutout at St. Lawrence back on Oct. 27. Last weekend at home, Vermont dropped two games to Boston College by scores of 5-1 and 3-0.
Freshman defenseman Andrew Lucas leads Vermont in points with five on the strength of four assists. Sophomore Joey Cipollone has added four points, including a team-best three goals, while juniors Christian Evers (2g, 1a) and junior Alex Esposito (2g, 1) and freshman Jacques Bouquot (3g) have three points apiece.
Senior Stefanos Lekkas, a Hockey East Second Team All-Star last season, has a .911 save percentage and 2.78 goals-against average through eight starts.
BU is coming off a home-and-home split with then-No. 5 Massachusetts with each team winning in its own rink. The Terriers held off a third-period comeback try by the Minutemen in the opener to earn a 4-3 victory, thanks in large part to Sam Tucker's career-high 49 saves. On Saturday in Amherst, UMass broke a 1-1 tie in the third period en route to a 4-1 win.
The Terriers posted a weekend road sweep of Vermont last season, earning a 1-0 overtime win on Feb. 22 before a 2-1 come-from-behind win the following night. Chad Krys scored the game's lone goal in the opener with an empty-netter in overtime while classmate Jake Oettinger stopped all 29 shots he faced. Vermont needed two points to keep its slim Hockey East playoff hopes alive and pulled Lekkas after 64:30 of scoreless action. On Saturday, the Terriers scored late in the second (Patrick Harper) and third (Joel Farabee) periods to come away with a 2-1 victory. BU held a lead for only 57 seconds all weekend but came away with four points.
Junior defenseman David Farrance leads all Division I players in power-play goals with seven. He is tied for the nation lead in goals with nine and his 16 points are the most of any Division I blueliner. The Victor, New York, native enters the weekend on a five-game point streak with nine points (6g, 3a) during the run.
