BOSTON - Graduate student
Sam Tucker stopped all 26 shots he faced to pick up second shutout of the season and lead the Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Vermont on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.
Freshman
Domenick Fensore opened the scoring at 4:21 of the second with his first collegiate goal before senior
Patrick Harper doubled the lead later in the period. Senior
Patrick Curry put the finishing touches on the victory with an empty-netter.
Tucker also added the first assist of his career and made 12 of his saves in the final period, helping the Terriers improve to an even 4-4-4 overall with a 3-3-3 Hockey East mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first period produced eight shots a side but no goals.
- The Terriers were able to kill off a 38-second 5-on-3 advantage for the visitors that stretched into the early moments of the second period.
- Fensore cashed in at left post on the rush with BU on the power play to give the home squad a 1-0 lead.
- Fellow rookie Ethan Phillips took a pass from junior David Farrance in the neutral zone and skated through the right circle before finding Fensore at the far post for his first tally as a Terrier.
- Farrance teamed up with Harper to make it a 2-0 contest, passing off at the top of the zone as they passed by each other before Harper weaved around the Vermont defenders before firing a shot from the left dot that beat UVM netminder Stefanos Lekkas high to the blocker side with 8:58 left in the second.
- In the final seconds of the middle stanza, freshman Trevor Zegras took a major contact to the head-elbowing call that resulted in a game misconduct, giving the Catamounts a lengthy power-play opportunity to start the third.
- BU's penalty kill was up to the task, however, helping Tucker keep Vermont off the board en route to the shutout.
- With Lekkas pulled for a late extra attacker, freshmen Robert Mastrosimone and Sam Stevens caused a turnover and allowed Curry to skate in all alone and score an empty-netter in the closing seconds to create the 3-0 final.
