The crosstown rivals will be meeting for the second time in five weeks as BU kicked off its second half on Jan. 8 with a 2-2 draw at Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Freshman Joel Farabee scored the game-tying goal and classmate Matthew Quercia opened the scoring in the contest with his first collegiate goal.
Junior Jake Oettinger made 26 saves in goal for the Terriers, who held a 31-28 shot advantage, and he picked up his first assist as a Terrier on the game-tying tally. It marked the fourth time in the past seven meetings that the Terriers and Crimson went to overtime.
BU and Harvard have played 155 times since the 1922-23 season and the Terriers hold a 80-69-6 (.535) advantage. The Terriers have won four of the past six meetings (4-1-1) after dropping five straight to the Crimson. That was BU's longest losing streak versus Harvard since dropping nine straight from 1960-64.
The Terriers and Crimson have 43 Beanpot meetings and BU has won 33 of them. However, the Crimson have won four of their five meetings in the consolation game.
Harvard has won four of its past five games with the only loss coming in the Beanpot semifinals against Boston College. The Crimson opened the season with a four-game winless streak (0-2-2) but is 12-5-1 since.
Harvard's power play is far and away the best in the nation, operating at a 36-percent success rate (27-of-75). Nearly 40 percent (37.5) of the Crimson's goals this season have come on the man advantage.
Junior defenseman Adam Fox ranks third in the nation in points per game at 1.41 with 31 points on seven goals and 24 assists. Freshman Adam Dornbach has made immediate contributions for the Crimson with 24 points (5g, 19a) and sophomore d-man Reilly Walsh has added 21 (7g, 14a).
Junior Lewis Zerter-Gossage has posted 17 points on the strength of a team-best 13 goals and freshman Jack Drury, who earned a silver medal with the U.S. World Junior team, has 18 points (7g, 11a).
In goal, senior Michael Lackey has started 21 games and boasts a 2.17 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.
BU had its run of four straight Beanpot title game appearances come to an end as No. 13 Northeastern scored 51 seconds into overtime to take a 2-1 semifinal victory at TD Garden. Oettinger was phenomenal in goal for the Terriers, making 47 saves – all in succession – as the Huskies scored on their first and last shots of the night. Farabee scored BU's lone goal, tying the game late in the opening period.
The Terriers are coming off a 4-2 loss at No. 2 UMass on Friday. Junior Dante Fabbro opened the scoring with a power-play goal and sophomore Shane Bowers added a shorthanded goal in the final minute of play. BU now has eight shorthanded goals, tied for second-most in the nation.
BU's penalty kill has successfully killed off 27 of its opponents past 28 power plays, and has a run of 26 straight come to and end on Friday. That was the program's longest such streak since one of 27 straight that ended on March 24, 2017.
Farabee leads the Terriers with 25 points and is one of three on the team with 10 goals, joining senior Bobo Carpenter and Bowers.
