Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Terriers Claim Gritty 61-53 Victory at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. –  Led by a 22-point outing from Payton Hauck, including dropping 16 in the second half, the Boston University women's basketball team earned its fourth straight road win with a 61-53 outcome at Colgate Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.

Hauck came out unstoppable in the third quarter, putting in 10 straight points on 5-of-7 shooting. Nia Irving also posted a strong game with 12 points and 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Riley Childs grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds and fell one point shy of a double-double herself.

How it Happened
  • Colgate took an early early 9-8 lead until Lauren Spearman picked off the Raiders and drove for a full-court fast break layup to get BU's offense going.
  • The Terriers pounded the post and capitalized on second chances, as six second-chance points from Irving furthered lead to 16-10.
  • Spearman made another spectacular hustle play, this time picking off a Colgate inbounds and finished with a reverse layup to put the score at 18-12 at the end of the first.
  • The Raiders started the second quarter with an 11-4 run to reclaim the lead.
  • Naiyah Thompson and Hauck put in two straight floaters to put the Terriers back ahead before Ashley Sieper hit two from the line to make it a 28-23 game at the half.
  • Colgate kicked off the third by connecting on 5-of-6 from the floor to put the scoreboard back in its favor, 34-32.
  • However, the Raider defense could not slow down Hauck as she netted seven straight points to put the Terriers back on top, 35-34.
  • Hauck stayed on fire as she converted on her second straight and-1 to guide a 6-2 run to end the third, sending BU into the final stanza with a 41-38 advantage.
  • The Raiders went ahead by one with six minutes left until back-to-back drives from Thompson and Hauck registered back-to-back drives once more to eke out a 49-46 cushion at the halfway mark.
  • Twice, the Raiders made it a one-point game over the final four minutes.
  • Katie Nelson swished her first basket of the game on a step-back 3-pointer to push the lead to 55-51 with 1:13 remaining.
  • Following a layup by Colgate on the ensuing possession, Nelson found a cutting Irving in the lane to make it a four-point lead again with 35.7 ticks left.
  • BU would convert on all four attempts from the free throw line over the final 26 seconds of the game.
Game Notes

  • Colgate took the lead six times, but never led by more than two points.
  • In all, the game featured 12 lead changes and eight ties.
  • Hauck's 22 points were a season high and one point shy of matching her career high.
