Lafayette Spoils Scanlon's Career Night in Seesaw Affair, 79-72

BOSTON – In a contest featuring a season-high 15 lead changes and 11 ties, Lafayette overcame junior Tyler Scanlon's career-high 28-point performance with the help of 10 3-pointers to defeat the Boston University men's basketball team, 79-72, on Wednesday night at Case Gym.

Scanlon went 10-of-17 (.588) from the field while adding a team-high seven rebounds, but the rest of the Terriers (11-13, 4-7 PL) finished 19-of-50 (.380) to see their two-game win streak snapped by the Leopards (6-16, 3-8 PL). Alex Petrie totaled a team-high 20 points to help Lafayette become the first opponent this season to outscore BU's bench by more than five points (34-10), while Lukas Jarrett came up one rebound short of a double-double with 13 points.

DOWN THE STRETCH
  • After freshman Garrett Pascoe gave BU the 63-62 advantage with a layup at 5:49, the Leopards called a timeout and found Petrie for a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
  • Junior Max Mahoney then tied the game for the 11th and final time with 4:59 remaining in regulation, but Lukas Jarrett responded with a go-ahead layup to spark the Leopard's 9-1 run capped by Justin Jaworski's layup at 1:17.
  • During that stretch, the Terriers missed three field goal attempts and one of two free throw attempts to face the eight-point deficit.
  • Sophomore Javante McCoy flushed his third 3-point on the next possession, and Scanlon completed a 3-point play following another Jarrett layup to cut the deficit to 76-72 with 43 seconds remaining.
  • The Terriers though were unable to get any closer, missing three shots, including two from behind the arc, after Petrie went 1-of-2 at the line.
  • E.J. Stephens hit both of his free throw attempts to seal Lafayette's victory.
THE SETUP
  • In a half featuring nine lead changes, Jaworski drained his first 3-pointer at 16:13 for the early 8-4 advantage, but the Terriers came charging back to pull ahead, 13-12, at 13:56 with Scanlon and McCoy combining for three treys.
  • BU used back-to-back layups from sophomore Sukhmail Mathon and Pascoe to grab its largest lead, 23-17, at 8:08.
  • On the next possession, Paulius Zalys hit a long jumper right when BU was committing a foul trying to get in position for a rebound.
  • The Leopards retained the ball and hit a 3-pointer for the five-point possession, which was followed by a defensive stop and Kyle Stout's layup.
  • BU grabbed its final lead of the half (38-37) with 47 seconds remaining on two free throws by freshman Jack Hemphill.
  • Petrie hit a jumper to retake the lead, and the Terriers missed two free throw attempts with 2.5 seconds remaining to face a 39-38 halftime deficit.
  • Neither team led by more than three points through the first eight minutes of action.
  • After redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino fed Mahoney for a layup and 55-52 lead, Jarrett had a slam dunk off the inbounds to spark an 8-0 spurt capped by Zalys' jumper at 9:22.
  • Scanlon then scored BU's next six points until Pascoe grabbed the 63-62 lead at 5:49.
GAME NOTES
  • Scanlon topped his previous high of 24 points scored at Lehigh last February.
  • Both McCoy (11 pts.) and Mahoney (10 pts.) reached double figures, while Mathon totaled six points and seven rebounds.
  • BU had just six turnovers for the second consecutive contest, but unlike Saturday's win at Colgate in which the Raiders committed 16 turnovers, the Leopards only had seven miscues while also totaling seven blocks.
  • Jaworski guided Lafayette's offense with six assists and 12 points, while Stephens had four points, four assists and five boards.
  • Lafayette only outscored BU by six in the second half despite shooting 53.3 FG% and holding the Terriers to 38.2 FG%.
  • With the win, the Leopards snapped a six-game losing streak to the Terriers, who now lead the all-time series, 12-7.
NEXT UP: BUCKNELL
  • The Terriers will next visit two-time defending PL champion Bucknell on Saturday (Feb. 9) with a 12 p.m. tip-off.
  • BU won the first meeting at home, 87-80, back on Jan. 5 and will try to sweep the Bison for the first time since joining the PL in the summer of 2013.
  • The two teams split at Sojka Pavilion last season with BU winning during the regular season, 84-79, and the Bison prevailing in the PL semifinals, 90-59, en route to the NCAAs.
