Men's Ice Hockey Falls to No. 2 Massachusetts, 4-2

AMHERST, Mass. - The Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped a 4-2 road contest to No. 2 Massachusetts on Friday evening at Mullins Center.
Junior co-captain Dante Fabbro opened the scoring with a power-play goal before the home team reeled off four consecutive goals, including three in the second period. Sophomore Shane Bowers added a shorthanded goal in the final minute of play.
The Terriers dropped their fourth straight game and now stand at 10-13-3 overall with an 8-7-2 Hockey East mark. UMass improves to 21-5-0 and 13-3-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers got an early power play and used it to open the scoring with a one-timer by Fabbro from the left circle at 6:54 of the first.
- UMass responded with a big second period, getting goals from John Leonard, Jack Suter and Jake McLaughlin in the frame to take a 3-1 lead.
- The Minutemen tacked on a power-play goal from the stick of Marc Del Gaizo with 8:04 left in regulation to go up 4-1.
- With the Terriers' penalty kill on the ice in the final minute, sophomore Kasper Kotkansalo corralled a deflected a puck and pushed it up to Bowers, who eluded a pair of Minutemen before finding the back of the net for his second shorthanded goal of the season.
- This marked the first time ever that BU was swept in a Hockey East season series with the Minutemen.
- Sophomore Ty Amonte and freshman Joel Farabee assisted on Fabbro's goal while senior Ryan Cloonan caused the turnover that led to Bowers' goal.
- Bowers' tally marked the 50th point of his BU career.
- The Minutemen's power-play goal ended a streak of 26 consecutive successful penalty kills by the Terriers, their longest such run in nearly two years.
- UMass held a 39-27 shot advantage as junior Jake Oettinger turned in a 35-save performance for BU.
- Filip Lindberg made 25 saves for the Minutemen.
- BU was 1-for-5 on the power play and killed off two of the Minutemen's three chances with the man advantage.
- The Terriers will return to action on Monday (Feb. 11) when they face No. 17 Harvard in the Beanpot consolation game.
- The teams skated to a 2-2 draw on Jan. 8 at Harvard.
- Monday's game at TD Garden will begin at 4:30 p.m.
