LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Continuing its spring break trip in California, the Boston University softball team came up just short with a pair of one-run losses at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore
Ali DuBois (8-3) tallied 11 strikeouts in the first contest, but the Lions (14-9) hit a two-out RBI double to send the game to extra innings and then took advantage of an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt to claim a 2-1 eight-inning win. The Terriers (11-9) rallied on freshman
Aliyah Huerta-Leipner's two-run blast to tie the second game in the top of the third, but LMU came right back in the bottom half with an RBI double to grab the lead for good. Senior
Alexa Ponce finished with a team-high four hits on the day, as BU stranded a combined 15 runners on base.
GAME 1: LMU 2, BU 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After BU stranded two on base, LMU led the bottom of the first off with back-to-back singles.
- DuBois got out of the jam with two strikeouts and a third out on the Lions trying to reach home during a double-steal attempt.
- The Terriers stranded five more runners on base against 2018 West Coast Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year Hannah Bandimere over the next four innings but managed to force a pitching change in the sixth on sophomore Maya Kipfmiller's lead-off single up the middle.
- After sophomore Marina Sylvestri laid down a successful sacrifice bunt and senior Madi Killebrew drew a walk, freshman Emily Gant delivered a two-out RBI single to left center to plate sophomore pinch-runner Jen Horita.
- DuBois claimed a combined five strikeouts in innings 5 and 6, but the offense did not provide any room for error in the seventh by hitting into a double play and failing to plate Ponce following her two-out double.
- The Lions started the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off single and then used a two-out RBI double by 2018 All-MEAC First Team honoree and Delaware State transfer Desiree Moreno to send the game to extra innings.
- Using international tiebreaker rules, Sylvestri laid down another sacrifice bunt to advance junior pinch-runner Kali Magane to third, but the Terriers were unable to plate her.
- Also starting off with a runner at second, LMU laid down a sac bunt, but BU threw the ball away to allow the Lions to walk off with the victory.
GAME 2: LMU 3, BU 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions jumped out with a pair of walks and took advantage of an outfield error on a single to grab a 1-0 lead against Magane.
- Freshman Julia Handfield held the Lions to only one more run on a sacrifice fly.
- After freshman Nicole Amodio was hit by a pitch in the top the third, Huerta-Leipner sent a two-run blast over the fence to tie the game, 2-2.
- Gant (2-4) entered the circle in the bottom of the third and allowed a single and a one-out RBI double to face a 3-2 deficit.
- Trying to extend their lead, the Lions had a double in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Gant was able to get out of trouble with the help of four combined strikeouts.
- BU had one more quality chance in the seventh on Sylvestri's lead-off walk and Horita's two-out single, but Washington transfer Samantha Manti (4-4) induced a ground out to second to seal the victory.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- Huerta-Leipner became the third Terrier to earn multiple homers this season, joining Heinen (6) and Amodio (2).
- The Terrier offense finished with a 13-10 advantage in hits against LMU with the pitching staff also posting a 17-12 advantage in strikeouts.
- LMU improved to 7-1 all-time having hosted a doubleheader each of the last four years and win six of the games by a combined eight runs.
NEXT UP: EASTON INVITATIONAL
- The Terriers will next head to Cal State Fullerton for the Easton Invitational starting on Thursday (March 14) at 9 p.m. ET.
- BU fell to the 49ers, 6-0, last season after splitting two games in 2017.
- The Terriers will also face Long Beach State, DePaul, College of Charleston and Iowa State on March 15-16.
