BOSTON – Following a quick trip to Connecticut for the Nor'easter Classic, the Boston University softball team will open a five-game homestand against Rhode Island on Thursday with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
The Terriers recorded a split this past Sunday with a 5-1 win over Siena and 1-0 loss to Iona. They will now host an Atlantic 10 team for the second consecutive week after winning the home opener against preseason favorite UMass, 3-1, on March 20.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is currently 1-0 at home after recording a 13-3 mark last season, highlighted by three wins in the Patriot League tournament en route to the NCAAs.
- Batting .239 as a team, the Terriers are 12-2 when scoring three or more runs and 1-13 when held below three.
- Senior Emily Morrow remains the team leader at .326 with 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored ... She is one of three alongside freshman Aliyah Huerta-Leiper (.277) and senior Alex Heinen (.239) to have at least one 3+ hit performance.
- Heinen leads the team at 19 RBIs and six homers, while Huerta-Leipner has a team-high 17 runs scored, three homers and 16 RBIs ... Senior Alexa Ponce (.272) is the fourth Terrier with double-digit RBIs at 10 after she became the sixth on the team to hit a homer against Siena on Sunday and currently leads BU with eight multi-hit games.
- Seven Terriers have earned multi-RBI games with both senior Madi Killebrew and freshman Nicole Amodio joining Heinen, Huerta-Leipner, Morrow and Ponce in the gorup.
- Sophomore Ali DuBois (10-6, 1.75 ERA) is holding opposing batters to a .237 average while tallying 96 strikeouts in 92.0 innings ... Freshman Emily Gant (2-7, 2.55 ERA) recorded 15 strikeouts on Sunday against Iona for the most by a Terrier since 2016 and is holding opponents to .255.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND
- The Rams are 11-14 following Wednesday's 4-3 walk-off loss to Providence after posting a 12-35 record last season.
- URI opened Atlantic 10 play with three losses at Saint Joseph's (2-1, 15-0, 10-1) after posting four straight wins against Drexel (12-6), Villanova (5-3), Saint Peter's (8-0) and Brown (3-0).
- URI entered the week batting .266 with a 16-12 advantage in homers while holding opponents to .268.
- Ari Castillo entered the week hitting .394 with three homers while Sami Villarreal is hitting .365 with team-high 15 runs scored ... Both own 10 RBIs and have combined for 35 walks to post on-base percentages above .480.
- Erica Robles (.315) owns a team-high 16 RBis with three homers, while Susan Harrison (.284) has five homers and 12 RBIs.
- Becca Rogers (6-4, 2.38 ERA) has tallied 62 strikeouts in 56.0 innings while holding opponents to a .221 batting average ... Sarah Gunderson (4-4, 2.71 ERA) is holding teams to .234, and Julia Waraksy (0-0, 1.96 ERA) has two saves.
