No. 16 Terriers Edged at Navy, 13-12

April 26, 2019

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Chris Gray tallied two goals and three assists to set a new single-season Patriot League points record, but the No. 16 Boston University men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-12 setback at Navy on Friday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

The Terriers nearly erased a four-goal deficit with 6:54 left in the game, but their rally came up just short. With the loss, BU (10-5, 5-3 PL) will host sixth-seeded Bucknell in a Patriot League quarterfinal game on Tuesday, April 30, at 7 p.m.

Gray, one of 25 men's nominees for the Tewaaraton Award, eclipsed Peter Baum's record of 97 points, which he set for Colgate in 2012, with a five-point effort on Friday. He can become the first player in conference history to reach 100 points in a single season with just one more point.

Senior James Burr tallied four goals while classmate Brendan Homire notched a hat trick and added an assist. Freshmen Timmy Ley, Matt Hilburn and Jett Dziama also found the back of the net, with classmate Jake Cates collecting two assists. Junior Jared Nugent also collected an assist.

Junior Joe McSorley made 14 saves in nearly 56 minutes of work, as freshman Matt Garber played the final 4:21 of the contest. McSorley also secured five ground balls.

Junior Reece Eddy collected a career-high 10 ground balls and also caused one turnover. Sophomore Michael Doxie and junior Chase Levesque led the Terriers with two caused turnovers apiece. Sophomore Kevin Snyder went 10-for-19 at the faceoff X and gathered four ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After McSorley made two outstanding saves in a row, Burr opened the scoring at 10:41 of the first quarter when he came from X and beat Ryan Kern up high.
  • The Mids answered just nine seconds later to tie the game before taking a 2-1 lead at 8:40.
  • It took just 28 seconds for Homire to respond for BU, but Navy scored again to take a 3-2 lead into the second stanza.
  • Gray tied the game at 3-3 at 13:07 of the second quarter when Cates drew a double and found the sophomore wide open for a step-down shot.
  • Burr gave BU a 4-3 lead and the Terriers extended it to 5-3 at 8:50. McSorley stopped an early shot during a Navy EMO, and the Terriers quickly moved the ball down field to Gray and eventually Homire for the finish.
  • Navy cut the deficit to 5-4 just 25 seconds later, but Homire turned in a great individual effort to beat his defender behind the cage and score to make it 6-4.
  • The Mids cut it to 6-5 with a goal in transition at 3:49, but Ley regained the Terriers' two-goal edge at 2:26 of the frame.
  • Navy once again got within one at 7-6, and that's where the score stood at halftime.
  • The Mids opened the third quarter with three straight goals to take a 9-7 lead at 7:31.
  • Hilburn made it a 9-8 game when he dodged from X and beat the shot clock, but Navy tallied twice more to take an 11-8 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
  • Gray scored a spectacular goal at 12:17 of the fourth quarter to make it an 11-9 game, but Greyson Torain quickly fired home a goal to regain a three-goal lead.
  • The Terriers had a chance to cut into the Mids' lead after a pair of Navy penalties, but a turnover nullified the chance and the Mids made it 13-9 shortly after the infractions expired.
  • Burr secured his hat trick with 2:15 remaining in regulation before Dziama capitalized on a scramble in front of the cage to make it a 13-11 game with 1:42 left.
  • Burr notched his 50th goal of the season with 31.1 seconds to go make it 13-12.
  • Snyder won the ensuing faceoff, but the Terriers turned it over with less than 10 seconds to play and Navy ran out the clock.
