BOSTON - Freshman
Jodie Conolly scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist while classmate
Caroline Kelly made 11 saves in goal to lead the No. 23 Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory in its home opener against New Hampshire on Friday evening.
Conolly scored in the 17th minute before junior
Liz Ryan scored what turned out to be an important insurance goal early in the second half. UNH got on the board with under nine minutes left in regulation and threatened to draw even before the Terriers held on for the victory.
BU improves to 2-1 on the season while the Wildcats drop to 0-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- All three goals in the game were scored off corners beginning with a perfectly executed drag flick from Conolly that found the right side of the net 1:58 into the second quarter.
- Juniors Paige Mautner and Ailsa Connolly assisted on Conolly's tally.
- After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, BU doubled its lead in the 34th minute when Ryan - from the middle of the circle - redirected a Conolly offering past UNH netminder Jemma Woods off a corner.
- Nine of Kelly's 11 saves came in the second and third quarters with six coming in the third alone.
- UNH was awarded a penalty stroke at 35:10, but Bloem van den Brekel's attempt clanged off the right post.
- In the fourth quarter, the visitors earned back-to-back corners in the 52nd minute and spoiled the shutout bid on the latter.
- After Kelly made a save on the initial shot, Isabelle Danehy got her stick on the rebound before Finn Caron punched it in at the 51:44 mark.
- UNH earned one more corner with 3:18 remaining in regulation but was unable to muster a shot.
