No. 7/8 Terriers Defeat Merrimack, 6-3

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Six different Terriers scored a goal to help lead the No. 7/8 Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 6-3 victory at Merrimack on Saturday afternoon at Lawler Rink.

BU (17-5-3, 12-5-3 HEAW) never trailed to extend its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1). Redshirt senior Sammy Davis tallied three assists while senior Deziray De Sousa, junior Nara Elia and senior Abby Cook each recorded a goal and an assist to pace the Terrier offense.

Senior Natasza Tarnowski's shorthanded goal broke a 1-1 tie early in the second stanza and sparked a run of three straight goals by the Terriers to pull away from Merrimack (4-19-4, 1-15-4 HEAW). Freshmen Julia Nearis and Nadia Mattivi also lit the lamp to help BU match its best offensive output of the season. Juniors Jesse Compher and Kristina Schuler contributed one assist apiece and classmate Corinne Schroeder made 13 saves to earn her 12th victory of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nearis notched the game's opening goal just 8:33 into the proceedings. De Sousa forced a bad pass that Nearis picked off in the Merrimack zone. Nearis skated in on Lea-Kristine Demers (39 saves) and slid the puck through the five-hole for her 10th marker of the season.
  • Merrimack answered just over three minutes later, and despite the Terriers outshooting the Warriors, 19-6, the teams entered the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
  • The Terriers began the second stanza shorthanded and then faced a 5-on-3 power play just 43 seconds into the frame. However, Tarnowski made the most of the situation as soon as her penalty expired. She came out of the box and intercepted Demers' pass before sliding the puck into the vacant cage at the 1:11 mark for her second goal of the season.
  • Elia made it 3-1 at 7:22 of the middle period. After receiving a pass from Davis, Elia dangled past one defender and skated to the front of the net. Demers saved Elia's first shot, but the junior capitalized on her own rebound for her seventh strike of the season.
  • De Sousa extended the lead to 4-1 just 1:23 into the final frame. She started the sequence by winning a battle in the right corner and allowing Schuler to secure the loose puck. Schuler skated past two defenders before the puck eventually bounced right to De Sousa, who one-timed it past Demers for her fifth goal of the campaign.
  • Merrimack got a goal back at the 4:12 mark, but Mattivi regained her team's three-goal lead just 1:44 later. Davis gained the blue line and dropped the puck back for Elia, who found a wide-open Mattivi skating to the far post. Mattivi made no mistake for her fourth goal of the year.
  • The Warriors once again responded to make it a 5-3 game at the 13:39 mark, but a late power-play goal by Cook sealed the 6-3 result.

  • The last time six different Terriers scored a goal was on Feb. 1, 2019, in a 7-2 win at Vermont.
  • Cook needs 10 more points to become the first Terrier defender to reach the 100-point plateau.
  • She has notched seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points this season.
  • Elia eclipsed her previous career high for points in a season and now has 20 points (7g, 13a).
