Men's Basketball Rolls to 77-57 Win at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Boosted by senior Max Mahoney's fifth double-double of the season and a 55.9 field goal shooting percentage, the Boston University men's basketball team rolled to a 77-57 win at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.

With their third 3+ game win streak of the season, the Terriers (13-10, 7-3 PL) remain just one game behind Patriot League leader Colgate (8-2). Forced into 17 turnovers, the Bison (9-14, 5-5 PL) suffered their worst loss ever at Sojka Pavilion, which opened in 2003. Bucknell's previous largest margin of defeat was a 79-60 loss to then-No. 4 Villanova on Dec. 6, 2005.

Mahoney posted a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, as BU extended its streak with a double-double to five games. Junior Javante McCoy tallied 15 points and five assists, while sophomore Walter Whye posted 12 points and seven boards.

THE TURNING POINT
  • The second half was all BU, as Mahoney opened with a layup and steal to spark an 11-0 run capped by junior Sukhmail Mathon's spin-around jumper at 17:20 for the 50-33 advantage.
  • In two highlight moves during the extended 24-5 run, sophomore Jack Hemphill fed Whyte for an emphatic slam dunk and Mahoney's monster block helped set up a 3-pointer from junior Andrew Petcash.
  • Freshman Ethan Brittain-Watts had a steal and fastbreak layup to put the Terriers ahead, 63-38, at 12:29.
  • McCoy gave BU its largest lead, 74-45, with a jumper at 5:27.
THE SETUP
  • With the score tied early, 6-6, McCoy hit a layup that was followed by Whyte's jumper and Hemphill's 3-pointer for the 13-6 lead.
  • Petcash flushed a trey at 11:24 to extend the lead to 18-10.
  • Whyte added another a 6:36 to give BU its first double-digit lead, 29-19, with 6:36 left in the half.
  • A participant in the last three PL title games, the Bison drained three bombs in the final three minutes to keep within striking distance of the Terriers, who entered the locker room with a 39-33 lead.

  • Mahoney claimed his 14th overall double-double, as he moved to 1,388 career points and 603 rebounds.

  • BU outscored the Bison in the paint, 48-24, and won the battle at the boards, 34-27.
