BOSTON – Behind
Riley Childs' second double-double of the season, the Boston University women's basketball team topped Patriot League frontrunner Bucknell, 52-48, Saturday afternoon at The Roof.
Childs notched 18 points, including 12 straight between the end of the second quarter and the start of the third, and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Maggie Pina also was lights-out shooting the basketball, adding 15 points on a 6-of-9 clip from the floor, while
Nia Irving poured in 11 points.
How It Happened
- Irving worked the post before Pina roped back-to-back jumpers, forcing the Bison to burn an early timeout as the Terriers thrust ahead, 7-2.
- Pina remained red-hot by drilling a 3-pointer, while Irving stayed aggressive by adding the next four points, guiding the Terriers to a 16-4 advantage at the end of the first.
- BU continued to smother Bucknell, as Maren Durant slipped in a feed from Irving, and Childs added two from the key to push the score to 22-7.
- Bucknell started to heat up, reeling off an 11-2 run to cut the gap to 24-18 with two minutes left in the half.
- However, Childs countered with another triple as BU maintained a six-point command at the break.
- Childs stayed in the zone to open the second half, knocking down another 3-pointer for her 12th straight point.
- The Bison kept clawing back, using a 7-3 streak to make it a one-point game, 30-28, at the halfway point in the third.
- Pina and Durant combined for the next seven points, while Irving connected again from the block as the score held at 39-34 in favor of the Terriers heading into the fourth.
- Both defenses locked in until Childs got The Roof on its feet by taking a hit on a fast break layup, and followed with another drive to the basket to keep BU in front, 45-42, with four minutes to play.
- Bucknell hit a pair of 3-pointers to take the lead, but Pina and Childs answered with two straight makes in the paint to put the Terriers back in front, 50-48, with 1:28 to play.
- Durant iced the game with a pair of free throws with 8.1 seconds left as BU held on for its third straight win.
