LOWELL, Mass. - Senior
Joe McSorley made 17 saves while freshmen
Vince D'Alto and
Thomas Niedringhaus each recorded their first collegiate hat tricks to lead the Boston University men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory at UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.
BU (1-2) scored the first seven goals of the game and held a 9-2 halftime lead over UMass Lowell (1-1). D'Alto was outstanding, as he added two assists to finish with a career-high five points. Niedringhaus and freshman
Louis Perfetto (1g, 2a) both finished with three points apiece to pace the Terrier offense.
Eight different Terriers found the back of the net, with freshman
Michael Gottlieb scoring his first collegiate goal and redshirt sophomore
Phil Wies notching his first goal as a Terrier. Senior
Jared Nugent tallied two goals while sophomores
Jake Cates and
Timmy Ley each recorded a goal. Junior
Tommy Nook and sophomore
Matt Hilburn each added an assist.
McSorley backstopped a stout Terrier defense which kept the River Hawks at bay all game. His 17 saves are the most he's made since a 20-save effort against Holy Cross on April 20, 2019. UML went 0-for-5 on EMOs and never found a rhythm at the offensive end.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU took advantage of its first EMO of the game when D'Alto connected with Ley at 4:25 of the opening quarter.
- Nugent then scored two of the next three goals, with Niedringhaus also finding the back of the net during that stretch, to give the Terriers a 4-0 edge after 15 minutes.
- The Terriers wasted no time getting back to work in the second stanza, as D'Alto scored just 1:29 into the quarter off a feed from Nook.
- Cates collected his first goal of the campaign at 3:59 when he dodged from X, spun past a defender, cut to the cage and scored as he took a hit.
- Niedringhaus notched his second goal of the contest just 27 seconds later thanks to an assist by Perfetto.
- UML got a goal back 58 seconds later, but Gottlieb responded with his first collegiate goal at 6:59.
- The River Hawks cut the deficit to 8-2 at 11:36, but Perfetto made the most of a man-up chance with 43 seconds to play in the half to send BU to the locker room with a 9-2 lead.
- UMass Lowell scored the opening goal of the second half, but BU needed just 1:05 to respond, as Niedringhaus completed his hat trick despite being covered by three defenders.
- After another UML goal made it a 10-4 score, D'Alto tallied two straight unassisted goals. He first came from below goal line extended, stopped then quickly turned and fired a shot past the keeper. D'Alto then shrugged off a check to rip home his third goal of the contest.
- Lowell made it a 12-5 game before Wies secured the result on the Terriers' final EMO of the day when he caught a pass and quickly uncorked a shot that hit the back of the net.
