BU Run-Rules UNCG, Edged by EKU in DH Split

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Featuring four homers, the Boston University softball team earned an 8-0 run-rule victory over three-time defending Southern Conference regular season champion UNC Greensboro before dropping a 3-2 decision to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop tournament.

Junior Marina Sylvestri provided the back-breaking three-run homer in the third against the Spartans (3-3), while classmate Ali DuBois (5-1) had nine strikeouts to help BU (8-1) open the season 8-0 for the first time in program history. The Terriers were one out away from extending the streak before the Colonels (6-2) hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Audrey Sellers and sophomore Aliyah Huerta-Leipner also went yard in the first game before sophomore Nicole Amodio added another bomb in game two. Sophomore Emily Gant pitched 5.2 no-hit innings against EKU before the Colonels began the comeback with a solo shot.

GAME ONE: BU 8, UNCG 0 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game seemed to be a pitcher's duel with DuBois and the Spartans' freshman Morgan Scott (2-2) combining for seven strikeouts through the first 11 outs of the game.
  • Sellers blasted a 1-0 pitch to center with two outs in the bottom of the second for the 1-0 advantage.
  • BU then blew the game open in the third with six runs off five hits and an error, as sophomore Bella Gargicevich-Almeida singled up the middle and scored on junior Jen Horita's RBI triple to left to start things off.
  • Huerta-Leipner and junior Patricia Dun both had RBI hits before Sylvestri blasted a 0-1 pitch to left center for the 7-0 lead.
  • Huerta-Leipner followed up in the fourth with a homer to center to put the game in run-rule territory.
  • Trying to avoid the shutout, the Spartans started the fifth with a double against freshman Lizzy Avery.
  • Returning to the circle, DuBois earned three strikeouts while allowing a one-out single to seal the victory against a team that had taken both then-No. 19 South Carolina and Ohio State to extra innings a week prior.
GAME TWO: EKU 3, BU 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Continued her impressive start to the season, Huerta-Leipner led off the second game with a triple down the right field line and scored on freshman Caitlin Coker's grounder that was mishandled by the infield.
  • Coker took second on a sac bunt and tried to score on a wild pitch but got caught in a rundown to keep the game at 1-0.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the second, Amodio homered to right to double the lead to 2-0.
  • The Terriers had a great opportunity to extend the lead in the fourth with a lead-off single and error, but the Colonels got a pair of ground outs and pop up to end the threat.
  • After the first two Colonels flew out to left, the third, Ariyana Miranda, managed to sail a pitch over the fence to cut BU's lead in half.
  • Seeking her third save of the year, DuBois finished the inning with an out and managed to start the seventh with two ground outs.
  • DuBois then got pinch-hitter Jaqueline Mercado to swing well out in front on a third strike that should have ended the game, but the ball hit the dirt and got away to let Mercado reach first safely.
  • Isabella Gonzalez made the Terriers pay with a two-run shot down the left field line for the 3-2 lead.
  • Samantha Reynoso (2-1) sealed the complete-game victory for EKU with her fourth strikeout, an infield pop up and ground out.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
  • DuBois has now been a part of four shutouts, including one solo blank sheet.
  • With the UNCG victory, DuBois moved into a tie for 10th in the Patriot League record book alongside Holy Cross' Genoa Grosch ('99) at 56 wins and is now one win away from tying BU Hall of Famer Robyn King ('01) for the No. 3 slot in the BU record book.
  • With 11 combined strikeouts, DuBois moved up to No. 9 all-time in career strikeouts in the PL at 439, surpassing Lehigh's Meri Wall's ('99) mark of 437.
  • The Terriers have recorded seven homers in the first four games of this weekend's tournament after hitting just one a week prior at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic.
  • Sylvestri went deep for the second time in her career after hitting one at Colgate on May 6, 2018.
  • Sylvestri now has 10 RBIs through nine contests after earning 12 in 57 games last year.
  • Huerta-Leipner has three homers this year after recording seven last year and just needs five more to crack the top-10 in the BU record book.
  • BU's 8-1 start through nine games is the program's best since 1995.
  • Following Saturday's doubleheader, the Terriers are now 3-1 against teams that finished last season with a top-82 RPI, posting two wins against Sam Houston State (70) and the run-rule victory over UNCG (73) ... EKU finished with an RPI of 82.
NEXT UP: VIRGINIA
  • BU will wrap up the second weekend of competition against ACC member Virginia with a 9:30 a.m. start time on Sunday.
  • The Terriers dropped the lone meeting in 2003, 10-9, in a game held in Raleigh, North Carolina.
