ROCK HILL, S.C. – Three was the magic number for the Boston University softball team Sunday morning, as junior
Ali DuBois limited Virginia to just three hits and freshman
Caitlin Coker made her third hit the go-ahead RBI double for the 2-0 shutout victory on the final day of the Winthrop tournament.
With a win over the Atlantic Coast Conference for the third straight season, the Terriers improve to 9-1, while the Cavaliers drop to 5-4. DuBois (6-1) posted six strikeouts against one walk to move into a tie for third all-time at BU with 57 wins while grabbing sole possession of the fourth slot in career shutouts (22).
Coker earned her third multi-hit performance of the season and is now batting a stellar .467 through 10 games. Junior
Jen Horita set up the game-changing seventh inning with a lead-off single, and sophomore
Emily Gant provided the insurance run with an infield grounder to plate Coker.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU had a great opportunity to strike early in the first on sophomore Aliyah Huerta-Leipner's walk, Coker's single and a wild pitch, but the Cavaliers got a pair of infield grounders to keep the game scoreless.
- The Terriers committed two errors in the bottom half with two outs before DuBois got a swinging strikeout to end the threat.
- Freshman Audrey Sellers laid down a successful one-out bunt single and stole second, but ended up stranded at second in the top of the fourth.
- Virginia started the bottom half with a single before Sellers threw a bullet toward second to prevent a stolen base.
- The Terriers stranded two on base in the fifth, as Horita led off with a walk, took second on Huerta-Leipner's sacrifice bunt and moved to third on Coker's single.
- The Cavaliers earned a strikeout and fly out to keep the score 0-0.
- DuBois allowed a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth before collecting a grounder and throwing to first.
- Horita led off the seventh with a single and turned on the jets to reach home on Coker's double to left center.
- Cooker took third on the throw home and scored on Gant's RBI grounder for the 2-0 advantage.
- DuBois quickly retired the side to seal the victory.
