Durant's Free Throws Push Terriers Past Lehigh, 48-47

BOSTON –  Looking to avenge Lehigh and clinch a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal home game, the Boston University women's basketball team earned a thrilling 48-47 victory Wednesday night at Case Gym.

Trailing by one and down to the final possession, Maren Durant was fouled with 0.8 seconds left and headed to the line with the chance to win the game. The Mountain Hawks called three timeouts in between free throws, but Durant remained steadfast as she swished both to seal the game.
 
With the win, BU has clinched a home quarterfinal game in the conference tournament for the second straight year.

How It Happened
  • The Terriers attacked the paint to start the game, as Riley Childs connected on two jumpers from the elbow, and Durant worked the block to put the score at 8-2 just under three minutes into action. 
  • Lehigh turned the tide, utilizing an 11-0 run to stake a 13-10 advantage at the end of the opening frame.
  • BU used the paint to get back on track, pouring in its first eight points of the second stanza within the key to set the score at 18-all with 5:45 left until the break.
  • Liz Shean kept the momentum rolling with a steal and fast break finish as the score held even at 22-all at the half.
  • Durant kicked off the third quarter with a trio of layups as BU pushed out a 28-24 edge.
  • Nelson added another pair of layups before Shean knocked down a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 run, making it a 35-31 game late in the third.
  • Nia Irving added her fifth make from the charity stripe the Terriers clung to a 36-34 lead at the end of the quarter.
  • The Mountain Hawks erupted for a 7-0 streak to open the fourth, flipping the scoreboard to 41-36.
  • Maggie Pina connected on two straight jumpers to get the offense back on track, making it a one-possession game, 42-40, with 3:55 remaining.
  • Following a Lehigh triple, Nelson and Pina went for consecutive drives in the lane to put BU within one.
  • Lehigh went back up by three with just over a minute left, but Nelson delivered a reverse layup through contact to cut the gap to one again, 47-46, with 54 seconds left.
  • Durant blocked Lehigh's final shot attempt with 27 seconds remaining and Childs came up with the rebound to give the Terriers a chance to win the game.
  • Driving for the game-winning layup, Durant was fouled and delivered the game-winning free throws as BU secured its fifth straight win at home.
Game Notes
  • Nelson surpassed 300 career assists, becoming just the 11th Terrier in program history to reach the milestone.
  • Wednesday marked the second time this season Durant has won a game from the free throw line in the final seconds.
  • The previous occurrence came Feb. 12 at Colgate when she hit two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to guide a 60-58 victory.
  • Johnson led the Terriers in assists for the second straight game, handing out five helpers.
  • Shean scored the first baskets of her career.
  • BU has posted 11 Patriot League wins for the second straight season and third time since joining the league.
