Seven Terriers Selected as Scarlet Key Recipients

October 12, 2021

BOSTON – Seven Boston University student-athletes – Mikayla Alcorn (women's soccer), Kathryn Grabowski (lightweight rowing), Kylie Graves (women's rowing), Jonas Harper (men's basketball), Hanako Kawasaki (golf), Megan Mastrorilli (women's rowing) and Josephine Olson (women's rowing) – have been named recipients of the prestigious Scarlet Key Award in honor of their service and leadership within the BU community.

The Scarlet Key Award, one of BU's highest academic honors, acknowledges the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics.

Named a team captain for women's soccer this summer, Alcorn has devoted herself to being a role model for younger teammates and being an agent of social change. Though sidelined by injury last season, she remained vocal and cheered on her teammates. Off the field, the New York, New York, native served as the driving force in helping form the Anti-Racism Leadership Group within the team as the chair of the committee and added the role of Vice President for BU Athletics' Student-Athletes of Color (SAOC) organization. One of only a few student athletes to be nominated to participate at The Naval Academy Leadership Conference this past spring, she is enrolled in the Questrom School of Business with plans to graduate with a degree in business administration and management.

Named lightweight rowing's team captain for the 2021-22 season, Grabowski made her mark in the water this past spring when she captured gold in the lightweight doubles race at the IRA National Championship Regatta, defeating crews from Stanford, Princeton, Wisconsin, Gordon and Oklahoma City by more than 19 seconds. The Saratoga Springs, New York, native has been an active member of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy and BU's Mental Health Awareness Committee. Within the athletic department, she's served as a team representative for the BU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was later selected to the Community Service Liaison position. This year, she sits atop the Executive Board as the SAAC President and will plan to graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in biology.

Graves rose from the 2019 Novice MVP award recipient to two-time women's rowing team captain. The Hoffman Estates, Illinois, native has demonstrated her leadership abilities beyond the water, participating extensively in several organizations that support individuals with disabilities and their families. Graves is the president of the BU chapter of Best Buddies, a community service organization dedicated to building friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. In her role, she's spearheaded several fundraising events and increased club outreach by networking with Boston Public Schools. She's the Co-Founder and Campus Manager of the Special Needs Advocacy Community as well. She's enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences with plans to graduate with a neuroscience degree.

When not exciting fans at Case Gym with a clutch 3-pointer or game-changing steal, Harper has been helping in several on-campus initiatives. First named to the 2019 Patriot League All-Rookie Team, Harper was twice later placed on the All-Defensive Team. In a highlight performance, the Stamford, Connecticut, native recorded 12 points and seven rebounds en route to the 2020 PL tournament title at Colgate. Besides being involved with SAAC, he's also served as Director of Operations with SAOC to help combat social injustice. This past summer, he interned with The Bitcoin Classic in a marketing and advertising role. A two-time PL Academic Honor Roll member, he's on track to graduate a semester early with a major in sociology from the College of Arts and Sciences and will begin work on a graduate degree.

A two-time Patriot League First Team honoree and three-time conference major award winner, Kawasaki continues to raise the bar with the golf team. Named both Rookie and Golfer of the Year in 2019, she added Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition this past spring while earning a 3.63 GPA in both business administration & management and hospitality administration. Besides winning four individual golf titles, the Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, native is involved in a number of organizations. She is the director of Finance Business and Technology (BizTech), treasurer of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy and the vice president of National Society of Minorities in Hospitality.

Mastrorilli has the unique distinction of being a four-time team captain for the women's rowing program. She stroked the varsity eight boat to bronze at the Patriot League Championship in the spring while earning her third Patriot League Academic Honor Roll award. The Portland, Oregon, native not only serves as a team representative to SAAC but is also a member of the group's Constitution Committee, Student-Athletes of Color group and Mental Health & Wellness group. Moreover, she's a co-founder of the Terriers Together Mentorship program, which is geared toward helping incoming student-athletes. She's also vice president of CRU Ministries, helping lead a group of women in weekly fellowship and discussion. She's set to graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in computer science.

Olson has already left an indelible mark not only on the women's rowing program and campus community but also within Boston. In the water this past spring, she helped the varsity eight boat post a 7-2 dual race record and bronze medal finish at the Patriot League Championship while boasting a 4.00 GPA for PL Academic Honor Roll recognition. Later in the summer, Olson interned for the City of Boston's Disability Commission and helped the commissioner implement the Americans with Disability Act across Boston. On-campus roles have included Vice President of the Deaf Studies Club and Executive Branch member within the City Affairs Division for the BU Student Government. Enrolled in the College of Arts of Sciences, she's majoring in American Studies with a minor in deaf studies.

The annual Scarlet Key tapping ceremony took place during Alumni Weekend, and the formal induction will be held on May 19, 2022, as part of the festivities for Commencement week.
