Terriers Remain in First Place after 2-2 Draw at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Lily Matthews scored her first collegiate goal with 2:31 remaining in regulation to force overtime and help the Boston University women's soccer team earn a crucial Patriot League point with a 2-2 tie at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.

Remaining unbeaten in now six consecutive games, BU (9-5-2, 5-1-1 PL) maintained its two-point lead over Bucknell (7-6-3, 4-1-2 PL) for first place in the Patriot League with the draw. Both teams have two games remaining in the regular season with next Saturday's home opponent Loyola Maryland (4-1-2) also in the hunt for the top seed after the Greyhounds extended their unbeaten streak to five games earlier in the day..

The Terriers twice erased a one-goal deficit, with junior Geovanna Pereira's first goal of the season evening the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute. Junior Marli Rajacich assisted on Pereira's goal, while senior Jenna Oldham secured her team-leading seventh assist of the season on Matthews' equalizer.

Junior goalkeeper Gretchen Bennett started the game for BU and made two saves while freshman Celia Braun's lone save late in the second half kept the deficit at one and allowed for Matthews' heroics.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bucknell opened the scoring in the 25th minute by bringing the ball up the right side and finding Abby Gearhart in the box with a cross for the quick strike.
  • Senior Amy Thompson earned the Terriers' lone shot on target in the 43rd minute, but Jenna Hall made the first of her seven saves.
  • Pereira evened the score in the 50th minute. With a defender on her, Rajacich ran down the right sideline, got past her marker and crossed the ball into the middle of the box where Pereira headed it home for her first goal of the campaign.
  • Braun made a great save a minute prior to Matthews' tying goal, as she came out of her net to cut down the angle on a point-blank chance.
  • After the save, BU won a free kick, which junior Ashley Buck quickly took. She passed the ball to Oldham, who raced down the right side. Oldham dribbled past a defender and got into the box before crossing the ball to Matthews, who struck the ball on the first touch with her left foot past the keeper.
  • In the first overtime period, Bucknell earned a free kick from just outside the box, but the attempt sailed well wide.
  • The Terriers had a free kick of their own in the second overtime period from inside the Bucknell half of the field, but the Bison defended it to keep the game tied.
  • BU earned a corner with 2:12 remaining in the contest, but Pereira's header was cleared off the line by a Bison defender.
  • The Terriers' final chance came with less than 30 seconds to play off another corner. The ball was sent into the six-yard box, but Hall fought through the sea of bodies in front of her to knock the ball down and eventually recover it.
