Terriers Fall to No. 13 Harvard, 1-0, in Hard-Fought Contest

BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team put together a strong effort against No. 13 Harvard on Monday evening as a penalty-stroke goal was the difference in a 1-0 contest at New Balance Field.

Junior Caroline Kelly made five saves in goal for the Terriers, who move to 3-12 on the season. The Crimson improves to 12-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers came out of the gate strong, connecting and creating through the midfield while preventing the Crimson from establishing sustained possession time.
  • BU earned the first two corners of the contest late in the opening quarter but the first shot was blocked and freshman Payton Anderson's drag attempt went just wide of the cage.
  • Kelly stopped a shot on the Crimson's first corner in the 17th minute.
  • Two minutes later, Harvard earned a stroke when it was ruled that BU fouled a player in the act of shooting and Hannah Pearce converted the try at the 18:16 mark for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
  • Down 1-0 at the half, BU got some early circle penetrations at the start of the third quarter but the Crimson defense held tough and was able to limit chances down the stretch.
GAME NOTES
  • Harvard held a slim 8-6 advantage in corners for the game and had six corners to BU's three.
  • Ellie Shahbo made two saves for the Crimson to earn the shutout.
  • BU started a stretch of three home games in seven days with all three opponents being nationally ranked.
UP NEXT
  • BU continues its three-game homestand on Saturday when it plays host to No. 22 American.
  • Game time is set for noon.
